Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Decided to get away for the Easter weekend and we have found ourselves on the East coast. On the to do list was Eddystone lighthouse. What a magnificent looking lighthouse. I love the granite, makes a nice change from seeing white structures. TFTC Clan Cerberus

#GA4086 - 13:15; This trig has been on my 'to do' list since I first joined GCA in early 2013. I lived in the general area for many years in my youth and my first job after leaving school was fencing the boundaries of the Mt William National Park. Finally made it out there today to grab the required snaps and claim the find Dancing . Brought back a lot of memories visiting the area today with the geomum and geohoney. Today I drove up from Hobart and dropped my wife and her friend off at the One Night Stand concert in St Helens.

As I had some time for caching I came up and found another trigpoint.

After meeting up with redtag & mouse, we did a trip up to the NE tip of the island, checked out the Musselroe wind farm and then headed south to here. On the way, I stopped and help a family from QLD with their flat tyre, repairing it in about 5 minutes.
Onto the lighthouse and I soon had a few pictures snapped. It was fairly windy here today, as everyone else was down at the boat ramp and I didn't hear them calling me....
After a while, they joined me. Cathy said that laying down on the grass watching the clouds passing the lighthouse made an optical illusion, so I joined her. After a few seconds, I felt a pain in my lower back, then some more lower down again. Turns out I was being bitten by an Inchman / bull ant. I fished it out but only after I had been bitten about 8 times in 3 different places. Found the nest access hole in the concrete wall on the edge of the path.

After leaving here, our next stop was Ansons Bay and Policeman's Point.

Heading into Mt William National Park. Pouring with rain we stopped here to visit the lighthouse before moving on.

Mr Felix had a chat with the ranger too.

It appears that Sam Carter has a bad influence on me. I only seem to do GCA caches when she is around - and so there were three on this trip. It also may be that, at my age, I'm set in my ways and don't look for the alternative website often enough. Whatever. Lovely spot, and a search around the shoreline for the quarry where they got the stone for the light is quite rewarding.

With reception poor, I took a punt that (a) there was a gca trig point here, and (b) the obvious thing was the trig point. So, I took the obligatory photo of self, gps and large granite trig point ... and lived happily ever after. Very Happy

Beautiful Lighthouse! .. A friend of mines father was the lighthouse keeper from '52-'56. The photos of her family and her that she showed me were amazing to look at. The buildings look exactly the same-she has changed a lot though Laughing

On a walk along the coastline we came to this great spot for lunch today. Pretty impressive structure, you ought to be able to spot the top of this for a few miles!

Our 2nd trig cache on a great day touring and caching in the area from St Helens. Magnificent stonework on the lighthouse......I reckon the best looking lighthouse we have ever visited. TFTC Very Happy

Found at 4.10pm. What a fantastic structure this is which is testimony to the architecture and workmanship of the era. We were fascinated by this place and the granite buildings. Thanks for bringing us here.

05-Oct-10
Our first Lighthouse Trigpoint! They certainly don't make them like this anymore

26-Sep-10
The entrance gate was wide open today and the area was most welcoming (apart from the rather strong winds). The lighthouse is truely a magnificent structure. Two photos have been included in the gallery: one of the lighthouse and the other of one of us at the door of the lighthouse.

21-Sep-10
A large sign at the gate states that 'vehicle or foot access to the lighthouse is acceptable'. Reactivated for others to log on that basis as we did.

19-Sep-10
Can be un-archived as the large sign at the gate now clearly states that 'vehicle or foot access to the lighthouse is acceptable'. No locked gates or issues now it seems.

30-Jan-10
forgot to log this when when we found lightem up eddie
Doh

Although the land surrounding Lighthouse is still listed as under the control of the Department of Environment Parks Heritage and the Arts....there is a locked gate which leads to Aboriginal occupied houses as the land in question is still in dispute.
To avoid any issues of access to controlled land this cache listing is being archived.

Although the land surrounding Lighthouse is still listed as under the control of the Department of Environment Parks Heritage and the Arts....there is a locked gate which leads to Aboriginal occupied houses as the land in question is still in dispute...hence why I placed my cache GA0842..Lightem up Eddy some distance away on the shoreline.
