Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Found while caching around Hobart with GrimRaider today. We came up to grab a cache and then the views and I figured there must be a trig up here! Great to find a couple while I was in Tasmania. TFTT

15-Jan-21
A quick trip up here after dropping the geoson off at the airport. Great views, TFTTP
Cheers,
The Hancock Clan

10-Feb-19
Came by today looking at a GC multi.

28-Dec-18
Too nice to stay at home today so I loaded the GeoGSP into the car and off we went to see what we could find. This was the first stop for the day, nice and close to home. Magnificent views of my place today! Photo attached.

Long time since I've been here. Makes me wish I could fly

03-Jun-18
Thanks for the trig.
Was up this way today chasing a GC multi, so grabbed the trig as well. I'd never been up here before, so I did enjoy the views on a nice sunny day.

16-Jan-18
On the way back from Port Arthur I noticed that there was another hill that we could drive up that has a trig on top. We were rewarded with spectacular afternoon views back towards the north east.

18-Oct-17
Quick find. Before work

Beautiful view here

16-May-16
Love the views from up here. TFTT

Having been up this way before I called in today to grab photo of the trip point and take in the fine view.

23-Oct-14
Still a bit confused what the actual trig point is up here! Regardless, a sunny but hazy day and the views were beautiful. TFTC

19-Aug-14
while I was in the area to do another GC cache I spotted this array of antennas and instruments, so I took a picture of them as proof of the visit.

31-Aug-13
ST76RM2 added to trig point name

22-Jul-12
I have been here e few times now, this time I took the right photo so I could log the cache.

01-Jul-12
Well, suppose that it is a bit poor really that this is the closest cache to our house (can see it from our bathroom window!) - with the possible exception of Red Light Warning, which we own - and we have never logged it!! With the incentive of Geosportz 2012 (see http://www.cachinggames.com/gz2012/index.php )we visited here today (again!!) and took what we gather is an appropraite photo. Although it is not the traditional trig marker, we gather from Sirius explanationin an earlier log that it is acceptable (and it hasn't been archived).

04-Dec-11
Guess after been up here so many times in larst few weeks I thought I would take a photo and say hey I was here.
JABs.

03-Dec-11
Out and about finding frogs and since the frog was hidden right where this cache was why not get 2 for 1.

03-Dec-11
Came up here quite some time ago to do a nice multi cache. The trig was here then but we didn't think to do that cache. (Only new to caching and didn't really know about Trig points then). Came back today to place a couple of frogs and the trig is gone as other cachers have stated. It is just such amazing views from here no matter where you look. Took some photos and released two frogs.

21-Aug-11
What spectacular views from up this way in every direction. Couldn't find the traditional trig point like the last few teams. Placque photo attached.

23-Jul-11
Somewhat overcast this morning, so not good views from this vantage point. We could not find the traditional survey structure or marker and, like many others, assumed that the commemorative plaque within a metre of the given coordinates was appropriate evidence to support our visit.

30-Apr-11
A beautiful day provided an excellent view

02-Apr-11
Lovely view from the top. About the only area in Hobart that I knew how to get to.

28-Mar-11
What a fantastic view from here, lovely mild evening. Trig is no longer here but you can see where it once stood.

22-Jan-11
I came up here looking for a gnome and while here I scored two for one, by logging the trigpoint while here. We have been here a few times over the years to collect various caches. Cheers Quilter

17-Jan-11
Dropped a gnome off here in the dark.

15-Dec-10
A quick snapshot while passing by.

26-Jul-10
Quick stop to this hill I have been to before. It has great views, but this was a terribly cold day to hang around enoughing the view.

26-Jun-10
Glad the road goes right up to this one otherwise it would be a long steep walk. Grabbed this one while attempting the other cache up here.

21-Jun-10
A workman was nearby, but there's nothing suss about taking pictures, is there?

31-May-10
12th and last for day 108th overall.Have been up here before getting another cache so thought i hade better go back.

13-May-10
Good views today from the top. Thanks

21-Mar-10
Nice easy drive-too trig point.

17-Feb-10
I came up here once before, but doubted the triginiess of this location, so today I returned to take the photo I should've taken "just in case" last time.

20-Nov-09
This ones been on my closest unfound for a while now, so moseyed on up today to grab in after the cool change came through. Still windy as.

13-Nov-09
Decided that whilst I was in the area, I'd duck up the hill and get the photo required before heading back to the squash centre to pick up the math guru son.
Having read sirius's note I picked what I thought was a good spot and took a photo.

12-Nov-09
Visited this place straight first thing this morning, but I did not beat the workmen!
Thanks GCA !

17-Oct-09
Very easy trig, which is always nice after long walks! No trig, but the top of the mountain is still there Wink

17-Oct-09
Obviously a nice easy find, only hampered by the fact that the trig point is gone!!!

Took a picture of the GPS where it should be though.

07-Oct-09
Found at 1145hrs and loved the views from as close as I could get. The attached photos show GZ and moi at that point. TFTC OldSaint.

04-Oct-09
found at 15:00. Thanks

30-Sep-09
Thanks for the correction Sirius Tas! Thanks also for the details about how to find that info on The LIST - that will be very handy!

28-Sep-09
Well that is fortuitous...not only can I now log it as a find, my curse has been lifted so I can legitimately claim a FTF I guess! Thanks Sirius! Photo as per my previous log!

LIST has the following details.
"A mast and navigation light centred over the mark ST 76 was destroyed in November 2005. The mark ST 76 was also destroyed at this time.

The mast supporting the existing navigation light is not coordinated. Neither is the light which is not located at the centre of the mast structure. The two most prominent masts , ST76MWT and ST76 have been coordinated for use as a reference object.

NOTE: A Site Summary for this station will probably display duplicate coordinates for ST76RT and ST76RM6. To obtain the correct coordinates for these towers view Mark Summaries for each tower."

I'm sure that being at the Navigation tower would suffice for the point of exercise...as it is co-ordinated for use as a reference objects.

IF you guys have any doubts as to a TRIGS veracity....GO TO...
http://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/listmap/listmap.jsp?cookieteststate=check&llx=536694.197&lly=5254178.515&urx=537458.876&ury=5254932.203&layers=17

Then use manage layers button...click on Administrative
under Topographic Information....click on Infrastructure...highlight Survey Control....then Arrow Right should see it appear in R/H column
GOTO Apply.....ST76 should appear on map...click on "i" ICON L/H side of screen...now highlight ST76 on map....info bar at bottom will give out latest information...sometimes with photos.

Hope the above helps....any troubles...please drop a line...have fun...Cheers.

BTW.....NOT ALL TIRG markers are the traditional quad beacon...some will be towers as above, others lighthouses, rock cairns etc.
If you're not sure what's there...check LIST before you go.

The last time I was here to place Robtas's movable (TRIG GA1320) I also found that there didn't seem to be a trig point, but I wasn't sure if I should suggest a "should be archived", maybe I'd missed it! I can't get FTF's at the moment as I still need to put out a COTFTF (which is another story in itself). Anyway Maddie and I came up here anyway in case someone else found it, then we could log it after them. If it gets archived I'll miss my opportunity, so thought I'd put a note on with the photo, as I thought it was a funny picture.

23-Sep-09
Unless I'm very much mistaken (and that's more likely than you might think), there is no longer a trig point on Mount Rumney. There is all manner of communications devices and red light warnings, but nothing like a traditional trig marker.
