Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Access is off McKays Forestry Road which you can get onto from either off the Lake Leake Hwy, Tasman Hwy or off the gravel road to Tooms Lake.

The spur junction off McKays Road which will lead to the Trig/Fire Tower is at S42 14.239 E147 50.956

Make sure you have good maps with you as there are a myriad of roads in this system.

If there is one thing I love doing, its walking up mountains Dancing some people think Im mad, but when you get to the top on a picture perfect day like today and you can see for miles its hard to beat Cool
I know I probably wasn't meant to but I did climb the tower to get the view! Rolling Eyes The sight f Freycinet in the distance was amazing and after taking the required photo I felt so good I think I almost skipped the 2km back to the car. Very Happy

A bumble bee wouldn't leave me alone when I was trying to get the picture. Can you spot him?

Having completed our research on the appropriate 1:25000 TasMap, we were quietly confident that we could find our way to this trig point with out too many problems. It was a pleasant walk up a gradual incline. The cool days (at least comparted to previous days)meant that we were able to get to GZ without the usual multiple recovery stops. We found the survey marker without any problems. There are great views from this firetower. However we think that it is apity that it is called the Moaners Tier Tower. The photo added to the Gallery shows two images: one of the survey marker; the second shows one of us in front of the Moaners Tier Tower sign. We were surprised that only a small number of cachers have visited this very accessible trig point.

From the gate to the top with no stop. A very pleasant and easy walk amid the forest. The gradual incline made for easy walking.
Good views from the steps of the tower.
TFTC and cheers;
OldSaint.

It seemed to take forever to reach the top starting off with a gradual incline that got steeper as we neared the top. We had a good view of Lake Tooms from the tower.

So, the second time today I have been to this gate and both times it was locked.
I have actually been here before and drove the red rocket all the way to the top, but alas, today we walked.
Once we reached the top, a quick look around and we just just make out Lake Tooms but nothing else in the mist.
Tim Tim took the picture whilst I held the GPSr....

On a caching weekend decided to do this while in the area. A nice stroll about 1.3km from the locked gate to the top. Started out ok by the time we reached the top the mist had set in. Could just make out Tooms lake in the distance before the mist once again closed in.
Will add picture as soon as I work out how lol

This was my very first cache try out using my new E-Bike. The gradient up to fire tower was reasonably gentle but a little steeper in places. The bike performed much better than expected pushing me up hills at 11-12 kph at times.....heck...much better than walking...lol....though my intrepid furry companion was very happy running behind trying to catch up. The road up is gated just off the junction and a 2km walk/ride to tower.Views are limited from ground level...but happy to be here. TFTC GCA...Cheers.
