Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Visited on our first camping trip out since covid but forgot to log. Couldn't get too near as there was an orange fence and lots of people around. Haven't been here for a few years. tftc

08-Dec-19
Hiked up the hill to find a new GC cache in the area, so have logged this one also while up here.

Wonderful day to walk up Mt Direction and find a trig i say! Wasn’t expecting the ruins they were a lovely surprise so much history loved it

28-Nov-18
I was up here exactly three years ago and thought it was time to climb this little mount again and this time log the cache that I had forgot to check out previously. TFTC and getting me up there again. Some guys are working on the track which it still passable but will be great in a couple of weeks for all to enjoy.

Found on a walk up to the Mt Direction Semaphore tower. Clan Cerberus

Found today after a long walk up a steep hill on a hot day! Thank goodness there was 2 caches up here it made the walk all the more worthwhile. However the walk was quite enjoyable.

This was one of a few select caches we had selected for a trip to the North of the state, having a weekend away cache way great fun with myself tagging along with GooseandEgg we grabbed a handful of caches on Saturday before heading out early today to set off up a mountain, it was a nice walk with good weather all the way.

Thanks for the Trig. (sorry for the late log)

We had a big day planned and this was just the start of it. Heading off WITHOUT having a coffee was not the best plan as we were too early for anywhere along the way to be open (along the highway not the track Laughing ). The climb was a mixed bag, starting off with a nice boardwalk, then a gentle slope, then it got steeper and zigzagged, then it got steeper again. We thought we pushed ourselves pretty hard but still took 35 min to get up there. Found some other caches up there too. It was a worthwhile walk!

A good longish trek uphill and I was glad to see the trig and the nearby semaphore and building ruins. The custodians of the semaphore have done a wonderful job preserving the ruins and keeping the track in order.

29-Sep-16
It's not the best weather to be doing this one.

04-Feb-16
A trek up the mountain in search of a nearby GC cache. Early morning, 25 degrees and was thankful I brought a water bottle with me. Exceptional views and historical significance.. thanks..!!

We tripped up here for another purpose, but I am please to be able to log this too. Our party was Ostara, sharkiefan and me!

We've only recently started finding GCA caches & at first thought we wouldn't bother with trigs as we've visited too many of them in our younger years when we bagged peaks rather than caches. But when you climb a hill for a cache & another's shoved right in your face, well - that would be silly wouldn't it? So there's another "GPS in front of the beehive" pic in the gallery. Remember one like this on Mt Arthur.

Had to get some exercise this afternoon. Rest of the family glued to a flickering screen, geo-dog and I went for a walk. Always enjoyed this walk, although haven't been up here for a while. Clan PhoenixVery Happy

Lovely walk this morning up to the trig, though I did look about and wonder where it was before I realised it wasn't in the 'usual' form.
Very interesting history and gorgeous views.

How much did I enjoy this cache!!
Firstly, it was to be my 500th "GA" cache find which had to be a challenge of some type. To my mind, it was the best cache that I completed today as I had to walk 381 metres up hill for 1.2km which would have expanded to more than the 1.2km as the crow flies. LOVED IT!!
I've now done both Mount Directions; the one down south and this one; and to my surprise both trigs were of the stone cairn type. Co-incidence, I wonder? Obviously that's what the surveyers did at that time.
The track into this cache is very good, a gentle rise to the top with seats all along the way if you need a rest. Wish I could say that I hadn't have to rest on the way, but I can't say that in all honesty.
The laughing of the kookaburra on the way in and out was very pleasant. They shouldn't have laughed at me so much just because I seemed to struggle on the way up.
At the summit it was a pleasant surprise to see more than a trig marker. The ruins and the signal post made the walk even more rewarding.
I logged the cache at 1730hrs and was back at the car by 1803hrs. Passed another walker and his two dogs on the way out.
I found myself wondering if it is harder on the legs on the way in or on the way out? But you've already pounded them hard on the way in and may-be just may-be that's why they feel so heavy on the way out!
Loved the cache and the great views that are available going both ways.
Recommend this cache to all cachers.
TFTC, my 500th "GA" find and the good feeling I had on its completion:
Cheers OldSaint.

Nice warm Spring day for a quick dash up the hill to help bed my new walking boots in.

25-Apr-11
Traveling in convoy with UncleTom. Had a great time with this. If you do decide to drive, remember to call past the start of the walk to pick up the first clue for gckf19 (Directional Scenes) which is also up here.

Decided that a sunny Anzac Day was the day to grab this and the nearby Multi. I'm too old and arthritic to consider the walk up the hill so looked for an alternate route from the east. The obvious route on Google Earth proved to have a locked gate, so we looked for some other way. After a couple of false starts, we found one - requires 4WD and a little skill, but when relatively dry doesn't require the expensive bits like diff locks, winches or mud tyres. Brought us to about 400m from the trig point, which was a fairly easy walk, even for me. Top spot - full of history.

22-Feb-11
Late afternoon walk grabbed a cache at the top making it worthwhile. First "beehive" trig Thanks

Felt a little crook today (self inflicted) and someone suggested I walk up a mountain to make me feel better Rolling Eyes
Five mins into the walk I felt way worse Evil or Very Mad but I figured I should push on and hope I come right.... and I did Very HappyDancingVery Happy
Once at the top I felt like a new man (well woman) and the cool breeze & awesome views made me completely forget about the night before Laughing

15-Aug-10
Got this one along with the 2 others up here.
Interesting area.

08-Aug-10
Not much of a view today due to the low cloud and drizzle but it's always worth the effort to get up here.

07-May-10
A teasing walk to GZ. A flat boardwalk was soon replaced by a a steady climb. After a while the gradient decreased as the track zig-zagged its way up the hill. Then there was an even steeper section which really tested our stamina. Nearing the top, the land levelled out again (thankfully). But, it was worth it - a very interesting and historic location made even better by a cool, clear day with extensive blue skies. We have never seen a "beehive" trig popint before - thanks. The round trip took 70 minutes including about 15 minutes exploring the site and locating the cache. TFTC

23-Feb-10
An easy walk up a good path to claim this one. Heaps of history to boot.

11-Feb-10
Very humid on the way up..then copped a short refreshing shower at the top. Another well built 'beehive' which are very prominent down this way. TFTC GCA...Cheers.

Grabbed a FTF on this one while we were completing the nearby multi. Interesting spot and a different type of trigpoint than the others we have found.
