Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Wow.

Finally got this cache and thanks to old saint for the inspiration. This trig is part of Oldsaint challenge cache. So I thought I better get it.

Stopped at the gate and rode up to the trig. Well kind off. Had to stop at three different spots as my legs simply are not strong enough.

1 Hour 50 minutes drive to Gate

33 minutes from parking spot to trig. Quite a while taking all sorts of photos around the trig and stunning views and then 12 minutes back to the car. Flew past one 5 foot tiger snake crossing the road but otherwise no wife life spotted. Now 1 hour 50 minute drive home!!!!!

360 views were wonderful!

Today we wanted to tick off a couple of trigs that have been on our to do list.

Had checked out the access on a previous visit to the lakes and decided to come back with the geobike.

Mr T braved the snow and enjoyed the unique trig and views.

After getting "Rocks at the end of the Rainbow" is was time to go and get this bucket list cache.
Got to the boom gate and thought: "Self, do you want to do this" Self answered "Yes!" So the climb was on!!
Walking the road, thoughts of bush bashing enter head but not for long - Think I would still be walking!!
Stuck to the road and arrived at GZ to find a worker there. We exchanged pleasantries and I walked on to the Trig.
Taking the necessary pics and the bugger drove off - was hoping for a ride back to the car - missed by that much.
The walk back was faster than that up, but it always is when it's down hill.
What a spot and the views are tremendous.
Sainted the Trig at 1540hrs. Round trip, including pics, was about 1hrs and twenty minutes. Forty mins up, pic time and shorter walking time back - not a real hard walk but enjoyable.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

Couldn't spend the weekend up the Central Highlands fishing and not do one cache (Trig)
The walking time is only about an hour but I found the overall time away from the car is considerably more because the views are impossible to leave.
Sheltering from the wind in the fire tower was very nice. The views in every direction gave a good perspective of distance to other mountain tops and lakes. Throughly enjoyed this one.

For future finders:
Park at the locked boom gate and continue along the road until you see the turn up the hill. Approx 500 metres

We had a preliminary look at the area of this trig point about eighteen months ago but, due to lack of time and fading light, we decided not to attempt it at the time. Today we went to Interlaken to look for two caches and, as we were ahead of schedule, decided to attempt this cache. As others had found, the gate was locked - so we sent off along the road. One turn and 45 minutes later we were at the trig point - any sections that were mildly steep were short - overall, a very pleasant walk. This is the first time we have seen an older style firewatch tower with a trig vane on "it's head" even though firetowers (without the hat) have been recognised as trig points previously - most unusual. There are numerous other radio and mobile phone towers at the site. The views from here were magnificent with Great Lake to the North West, Arthurs Lake to the North-East and the grazing areas north of Bothwell to the South-East. The firetower still appears to be in use given the items on the table including map, telephone, toaster and toilet paper! We can strongly recommend visiting this trig point both for the unusual structure and the great panoramic views.

It was starting to get late and we still have the drive back to Hobart and home but decided to detour in and do this trig point while we were in the area.

We are so glad we did! What an unusual little trig this one was with the little room under the actual trig itself.

The views just went around and around and wherever you looked it was beautiful! Took lots of pictures before we left. TFTT. (Thankyou for the trig).

Left the car near the gate and walked up the hill. I'm glad there was a road as it would have been a scrubby walk otherwise. Very windy on top but good views of the area.

Tried to do this trig the easy way but to no avail. Anyone wanting to do this cache from now on must walk as there is a very large boom gate across the access road. I didn't have the time or the energy to do the walk today so will have to wait for another day

Approached from north but gate locked. Jumped on the E-bike but pretty tough going with large loose rock on quite steep sections. I didn't think the bike was performing all that well going up...until I started to come back down....boy oh boy...pretty darn steep with brakes on nearly all the way down....returning back to start I was fairly impressed....saved quite a walk.

Way back in February (or was it late January), I came up here in my little red cachemobile and my muggle passenger really didn't think that we would make it to the top. Once I returned from the near cache-free Solomons 7 months later, I again came up here, with the same muggle workmate to retake photos that my phone seems to have lost....
Just a little snow up here today and Nick was kind enough to take photos whilst the cold wind chilled us. A great 360 degree view that rates in my top 10.

Nearly a drive by if approached from Barren Tier rd (not sign posted) nearly opposite Todds corner turn off. But boom gate may be locked. Good luck.
