Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Best access is off the Zeehan-Strahan Road at S42 06.602 E145 17.371. Take a left turn at S42 05.742 E145 17.749 proceeding to start of a newly gravelled spur at S42 05.340 E145 18.789. 4WD will get a little further but track is blocked with trees...but easy grade up to the old fire tower.

Bit of a slog getting up here. The tracks are getting very overgrown, and the last 10 meters up to the structure are very thick and appears to be a long while since anyone had ventured into it. Beautiful piece of Tasmanian history hidden in the old forest. Shame the vandals have destroyed some of it.
Thanks for the cache, well worth the effort.
Cheers

A fun drive through the beautiful forests to this old tower. Parked at the bottom of the hill and then just a short stroll to the top. A great pity about the damage to the tower. I reckon it must be a few years since it has been used for it's original purpose because the forest has grown a lot to obscure the views from all sides except one and that is where the forest has been felled. Thoroughly enjoyed this cache. Very Happy

Found with Tassie Trekkers while holidaying on the west coast. Glad Tassie Trekker's geocruiser took us nearly all the way as would have been a long hike.

Found on our West Coast Wilderness holiday with whitewebbs. While staying at Strahan we found several caches in the area and this was one of them. Thanks for the directions we found the way in easily. The tower is still there although in disrepair. Got as far as we could in geoocruiser then walked the short distance to the tower. Good views on a beautiful clear day. TFTC

Got to the bottom of the hill and there was a tree across the road. If you read Swampy's log it says we moved a large piece of dead fall...i will let the pic tell the story. Got past that and parked and walked up the hill. Found the tower in a bad state of disrepair. Great views though.

We too, got to the bottom of the track - we even moved a large piece of dead fall to get there but the numerous trees across the track meant we had to walk as well.
Found the tower - pity about the vandalism.
I have (in the early 90's BC) actually driven a 2WD panel van (work cars go anywhere!) up to the tower when it was between operations.

Thank you for the driving instructions - they made access quite a deal easier. We were lucky that we had left a bow saw in the back of the car as there were three trees down over sections of the road. a pleasant walk up to the fire tower but it is a pity to see the extent of the vandalism. TFTC

Drove as far in as possible, then geoteen scaled the hill with tattsus to find trig as track was blocked with fallen trees

06-Nov-10
Mr Tatts made the climb to this trig quickly and I finally made it to the top. A steep walk but well worth the effort.

Eventually found my way into the tower and after a short walk. The tower has broken windows....so glass under foot...be careful. The views to west are good...but large pines are blocking the view out to the coast....Cheers.
