Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Woohoo! What a find! FTF too!

Wayn0 and I were determined I find out if this trig really was inaccessible. Wayn0 did a bit of reconnaissance work on Friday, seeing all the signs of strict restricted access as before mentioned. 20 years imprisonment!?! However, looking over maps of the area later that day he noticed there may be a way in beside the golf course. So today we decided to give it a shot.

After a late breakfast, because wayn0 isn't a morning person, we found our way to the golf course. Closed gate, road but no vehicle access, and no restriction sign. Bingo! I enjoyed trudging up the sandy hill barefoot till the intersection where the tree cover made it a bit harder to go barefoot. I was struggling with sore knees and trying to master walking sticks when wayn0 pointed out the big white golf ball in view and not far ahead. We both dropped our walking sticks, aided by the adrenalin of being able to get all the way up without a restriction sign in sight, and the hope of a trig find. And there it was!

Toppled on its side, but there nonetheless. Tripod, vanes, pin, old star picket witness post and newer gal witness post. All with the lovely view of a radio tower, a giant aviation somwthing-or-other, and a tiny bit of distant ocean. We finally found a restricted access sign here, but it was behind the trig as seen in one photo attached, so we could wander around the trig taking photos without the worry of being locked up for 20 years. Haha.

GPS said the walk was under 3km return. So not a long walk, just a bit of an exhausting sandy hill walk. I wonder if snow shoes would make sand walking easier?

Sorry, it is 2019 that sand mining finishes on the island.

This could be in an area where they are currently mining. Keep in mind that sand mining on the island finishes next year. After remediation this area could be reopened for public access again. Unless it's a secret base or the aliens have taken over...... Smile

I agree wit JAT. It appears that the trig point is in a restricted area but as it should be there and would be accessible if a person had the correct permissions I don't think it should be archived. One day, a cacher will be on the right side of the permission list and get to find it.

From what we could see, all access roads are gated, with one with a large sign indicating "No unauthorised personnel permitted".
