Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Known as Merimbula Trig, thanks to the wreck of the SS Merimbula nearby, this Trig Point is located in Abraham's Bosom Reserve - so called as it offered safe harbour to sailors travelling up and down the coast in years gone past. There are several good walking tracks, and dogs are allowed on leash.

Out for a walk to the tunnel with some friends who hadn't been there before. Was nice to introduce them to geocaching and collect a couple of easy trigs on the way, I also love the excuse to tell people about trigs and where they are where they are Smile

I was on a walk in the area with my Walking For Pleasure group, so unfortunately I wasn't able to find any other caches in the area - but at least I did get a photo at the trig, so all was not in vain! Lovely area for a wander. Quite some distance from Merimbula, but I suppose there was the SS Merimbula wreck in the area.

Doing Coomies walk today, so I grapped a snap with the trig

Continued on from the previous cache and after about 10 minutes arrived at this trip. Talk about the middle of nowhere...and with all the surrounding bushland being twice the size of the trig, I don't; think this one can be used much anymore. Still, nice little walk with ocean views....sort of.

Found on our trip to Currarong - happy Australia Day! While getting the nearby GC cache (with great views), we came here for a very quick photo. TFTC GCA! Clan Cerberus

Found this trig while out picking up some GC caches along the Coomies Walk. We didn't have a great lot of time this afternoon so decided to do an inner loop of the Coomies trail. The trail we started on was nice, wide, sandy, dry but with evidence of past water and muddy footprints off track where obviously other have cached this trail in the wet and must have had a hard time of it, in place going around big areas of wet. Today was sunny and windy but once in the trails we were relatively free from the wind with just a nice breeze to cool you down when needed. Once we reached "the stairs" up we climbed and following the Coomies walk still decided to follow it towards more caches and the car park. Mistake... the trail from the trig to the Aboriginal Cave Shelter was interesting to say the least. The trail today is no more than a washed out narrow course where the water flows down in the rain with exposed tree routes and deep step downs slowing progress considerably. Clambering down to the 'boardwalk' which is nearly covered with vegetation but still visible... just, in the fading light. After this cache we decided to stop caching and just keep the trail in sight by a small torch light and the phone and ipad. It was a long hard scramble up for me from there but we finally made it back to the carpark well after dark. In hindsight and now knowing what the trails were like on that inner loop we maybe should have gone back the way we came.

Geocaching Australia (GCA) Cache Find Number 1202 - 12297 overall cache finds.

Found while on a caching run with specimenX down the coast - a really fun trip with lots of cache finds. While I mainly looked for GC caches, when an easy GCA cache comes along we go for that as well. Trigs are particularly nice to track down and find. I was very happy when they became part of the GCA cache family. Its especially satisfying if you have made a big climb up for one ! I have also now joined dragonZone in Clan Cerberus, so there are more reasons to find those GCA caches. Its interesting to find the many different types of trigs. From the traditional metal legs and vanes, to the concrete base with vanes, to the ones on top of water tanks (especially the red ones !), as well the new CORS type. When you look on a GCA map and see all those hundreds and hundreds of blue 'Z's it shows just how many there are out there. Shame so many are on private property and cannot be accessed at all. So as far as I'm concerned every trig that can be found and photographed is a real bonus !

The trig was quickly 'found'. Piccie taken and posted. Grabbed while doing the loop finding all the nearby GC caches.

Thanks Geocaching Australia !

Must of rained last night as my hiking boots are soaked. the path here was more like a creek.

#GA606 - 16:40; I was in Nowra for the night and decided to head out to the lighthouse for a look. I saw that there were a couple of trigs not far off my planned route, so dropped by to bag them. The first one out of the way, I continued on for another 15 minutes or so to reach this trig. Unbelievable amount of water about, which saw some detours from the formed track to get past. Once I had the required snap, I chose a different path back, which looked like it should have intersected with my route in. Bad move. The return track I had chosen soon headed off in a different direction and what should have taken maybe 20 minutes took an hour to get back to the geomobile! After finding Eves I thought we could still find a few more caches before having to head back to Taree for work the next morning. A lovely walk, and trig found with intact name plate. THANKS

The first time in many years since I have been to Currarong and didn't really have enough time to look around so went straight to the Trig via the Aboriginal shelter on Coomies Walk and returned the same way.

Dropped in on our way past as we headed off to a nearby GC cache. There are excellent views to be had in clear weather. Is known as the Merimbula trig thanks to a nearby wreck.

This was found after doing the other nearby trig with family and friends while camping at Honeymoon Bay on the last weekend of the school holidays. It was a medium level walk, but some great views to be had.

Missed out on a FTF at Photo Rock, but bumped into this Trig Point onthe way back, so logging it as consolation! Terrific views, and a perfect rest area after a long hot walk.

A trig station located on Beecroft Headland, near Currarong. I took the Coomies Walk as the sign indicated this was the best way to go. It was mostly uphill & quite a distance but the views from the nearby lookout extended to The Castle & Pigeon House Mountain awa the Jervis Bay area. The nearby bombing range was active but didn't wait round for any stray missiles. Whoooosh. There are some really good GC caches in the vicinity.
