Description

Canobolas TS1386

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Canobolas.

Serial number is: TS1386.

Last inspected on: January 13, 1977.

Elevation is: 1396 meters.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Up early this morning after camping in the nearby parking area for the camping grounds as the gates were closed. I headed up here in glorious sunshine to see the most beautiful view. Cloud cover to the east and farmland to the north. TFTT Geocaching Australia. Photos attached. DancingDancingClan CerberusClan Cerberus

Gee, I thought we were hard, venturing up here this morning in 6 degrees, rain and whiteout fog/cloud. It seems our colleagues before us take that honour! What a spot, we'll have to return when we can see though!

On an Orange surrounds trig hunt with rogerw3 in dismal Wintery conditions ...

A gate closed due to snow, and a companion that sees no hurdle stands between a trig, it was for a park and walk to the top. It was not overly steep, but goodness it was cold, and it was for a few hundred metres of snow covered roadway to traverse to near the top - and then it was truly cold in the rain driven wind. There be better days to view this trig, but it was worth the effort as Canobolas stand with full vanes, mast and name plate in immaculate condition.

Three in one. Nice. Finally escaped Dubbo and decided to camp at the Federal Falls camping ground last night. Picked up three trigs when I arrived. Just missed the sunset. Sad

Found on our short visit to Mt Canobolas while staying in the caravan park in Orange. What a cold day as the air is clear and crisp. It is a great drive up to the top and the view is magnificent over these plains.

Popped up to Mt Canobolas. Trig in good condition considering number of tourists up here.

I didn't expect to be back up here today !!
My last visit had been a couple of years ago at least Surprised
But somehow on a forest drive from the west, I took a wrong turn and ended up on the bitumen road just a kilometre from the summit and a smattering of trig-points and a geocache Shocked
It was relatively warm up here early morning, but I put on a jacket just to be sure.
Yep!! Sure is cool Cool

Great views from up here & a bit cooler which was a welcome relief.

02-Nov-09
Stopped by this one whilst picking up other caches on Mount Canobolas. Magnificent morning at about 30 degrees. Couldn't quite see Forever but I could see the town beside it. Well worth a drive to the top of the Mount.

16-Oct-09
Went for a drive to the top of the mountain with Tommo's Mob for some views before leaving Orange but it was clouded in and only 1 degrees. So after grabbing the other caches nearby we stopped and got 1 photo of me before jumping back into the car. Couldn't take a phot of Tommo's Mob as he dropped my phone after taking the photo and that was that, not happy Jan!

I've downloaded another photo of Tommo's Mob from a previous cache. He was definitely there with me.

12-Oct-09
Found on a very misty day. Not a very good view however, it was hit and miss between the clouds. Came up to do other caches and discovered the trig was here too. (apologies for blurry close-up. I will have to learn to use camera better)
