Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Walked the PCT from Taylors Flats. Good clear views today, but a hot walk up.

14-May-17
Good walk up to this one and rewarded with some pretty good views, the passing clouds notwithstanding.

02-Nov-13
Lovely view in perfect weather. Very Happy

03-Sep-13
ID obtained from DPIW LISTMap database and added to cache name.

02-Apr-12
No chance for coffee today, at least not with milk in it. Wind definitely strong enough to blow the milk out out of your tea and I'd imagine similar principles apply to coffee.
Our trig image is in the gallery and the model is hanging on to the trig point to remain in location. Note sleeve and GPS lanyard!

26-Jan-12
Top day for a coffee, roll and date loaf looking out to the coast and the many peaks in view. Light wind and warm weather.

Two other gentlemen came on the scene after a while, they had come up from Taylors Flats route. Group of 6 setting up camp at Paddy's lake as we departed as well. Busy day at Black Bluff after we arrived.

Just another trig?
Not really, this one is really worth a visit especially on a clear day.

30-Apr-11
Got to this trig from Taylors Flats with the NWWC.

03-Oct-10
Fine weather until the plateau was reached then it clagged in. Had to find the track across snow drifts so the going was slow. No views from the top so it was a quick photo and out of there.

One of our favourite walks, forever etched into our memory by the size of hill and the fierceness of the wind, This was the first time we had been blown off our feet....

I just happened to be in the area Smile
This is a great walk and if you pick good weather you will be rewarded with breathtaking views.
I picked appalling weather so the breathtaking experience I felt was the gale force wind.
Like always I enjoyed the whole thing and managed to take the required picture.

This is one of the few photos that I have from a previous walk up to a trigpoint - with me in it and the trigpoint and GPS. Usually I stand AT the trig area and take photos looking out! So for this one I don't have to walk back, mind you it wouldn't be a bad thing anyway...it's an amazing walk. (well it was, both times it took to get to the top). Here Lil Carolleyre and I were being buffeted by the howling wind. And I've never felt so cold!

TrigPoints and standard geocaches are different types of caches and can happily co-exist along side each other.
For those who seek TrigPoints and standard geocaches, they can consider themselves lucky and can claim a "two for one" deal provided they meet the requirements of both cache listings.

Was looking through my photos and found this one of the trig on Black Bluff. It was taken before trigs were a cache type, so doesn't include the GPS or me or my partner in it, sorry. I'm considering it acceptable for a find 'cause I've already climbed up there twice and not likely to go back just to stick the GPS in the photo!! Also got the nearby Devil's Gauntlet D cache, with my signature in the book which is suitable evidence that we were up there.

It was one of the first great walks we did after recently discovering geocaching and might never have got to the very top at all if not for Sirius's wonderful cache. We were also blessed with lovely clear weather on the day and top views all round.
