Description

Cathedral Nth 1973 - Taggerty PM 34

About this location

This trig point is located in the Cathedral Range State Park atop the 840m namesake peak of the park, Cathedral Peak. It can be reached by parking at the car park for the Neds Gully camp ground (note that camping here requires a permit from Parks Victoria). It's a moderate walk up the hill, though the view will certainly make up for it.

About trig points

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Using the web-based "Survey Marks Enquiry Service (SMES)", the details for this trig station have being acquired.

Woah, what a walk. This trig point was on the route of our monthly bushwalk today and took us about 4 hours to get to it Shocked (courtesy of stopping at a few other caches on the way up of course Wink). We finally arrived at 14:25 though and Al grabbed the shot for me - silhouetted with the sun at my back. Before long, it was back to admiring the views and then we all continued on our way.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

Although originally planned as a day hike, we decided to make it an even more enjoyable experience by heading out Friday night and camp overnight at Neds Gully. What an amazing site and what an amazing view from up there.

Came here on a camping trip with the uni outdoors club on a rather rainy weekend. I really didn't have time to do any traditional caches as the overarching concern was to complete our walks before dark. Plus at this particular location we had a group of about 30 people heading up the hill. So I figured the least I could do was get a photo with the trig point. You can't see my GPSr in the photo though I promise I did have it with me. Wink The view was quite nice over the valley and although obscuring some of the view, the cloud kinda did make it more interesting.
