Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It may also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself. This one is a short concrete pedestal, with a metal pole, and black metal vanes on top.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

My main purpose today was to drive a loop from Lismore, going through Casino and Tenterfield and then a visit to Tommys Rock. I’d go home via Grafton. I saw that this trig was pretty close to the road, so decided to stop and see how accessible it was. I pulled over at the start (or end) of the nearby walking trail, where it meets the Gwydir Hwy, and walked the trail for a bit. Topo maps seemed to indicate that access from the South, or North would be easiest. The area is pretty overgrown, and plants are flourishing since the fires in 2019, so it was hard to make out the best route visually. South seemed too hard and slippery, so I went North, and scrambled my way up. It was fairly slippery, but a large fallen tree made things a bit easier for me.

Once on top it wasn’t hard to pick my way through the rocks to the trig. Another trig with amazing views. 360 degree views over the hills and valleys that is the Gibraltar and Washpool National Parks.

The trig is in good order, and still has its name plate attached. I noticed as I was taking photos that there was rain heading in from the east, and that wet rocks could be a bit slippery so I decided I best make my way back to the car (which I could see in the distance from up here). The heavens opened just as I drove away. Perfect timing.

Found this 'critter' on the way home from hiking in the Gibraltar Range NP over the Queens Birthday long weekend. Will dig out the camera and post a photo. Thanks Cookie for the lift up here.

1340 After the NNSW Pathfinder Expedition to Mount Gibraltar NP, and the 'C' group of Port Pathfinders had all been marked off I was able to head off. Not having a full 1:25,000 map of this area I just had the part copy that was supplied for where we were walking to the Haystack. But it did show a trig station called Boundary, elevation 1150 m, just north of the Gwydir Highway.
So on the way home I pulled over at a fire trail gate, and walked back along towards the rocky hill. It has quite a sloping rocky collar, that with the rain became a very real challenge. Almost T4½, but probably T3½ in the dry. Once near the crest / top, the footing became a lot more surer and safer.
Soon saw the familiar vanes, but the concrete pedestal was a lot shorter than most I have seen, and it had a metal pole, but with the 'Boundary' name plate horizontally on top of the concrete.
Tried to get some photos without getting the camera too wet, then descended. Nice spot, and the first time that I can remember being up the Gwydir Highway.
