Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

It was a relaxing walk up. I didn't manage to find the GC cache, as there were people around, but the trig was no issue. I took a shortcut to get back when the forest floor was not too steep.

12-Apr-23
On the road from Bendigo to Ballarat. It was wet and cold, so we did less trad caches, and more virtuals/ALs/ECs....
Looking at the map we thought we could drive up to the trig, but the road is now gated. It was worth the fairly easy walk in any case. No views through the clouds today.... I've nudged up the terrain rating a little, to 3.

Joolay and I climbed to the summit today and were very happg to find a trig up here. Lovely spot to visit.

28-Jul-20
After a cardiac workout slogging direct up the inner crater wall and down the other side for the nearby "Emu's Nest" GC Trad, we made our way back to here, grabbed the necessary evidence and then headed off in pusuit of Greek Gods.

whoo hoo I made it to the top, what an awesome spot and well worth the effort, thanks for the Trig

01-Jun-16
Camped here last night and although very cold it was a top spot. Wasn't sure about the track to the trig so rode up early this morning but we could easily have made it up there in the campervan. Thanks.

03-Aug-15
Camped here for 3 nights. Very very cold being the coldest Winter on record in Victoria.

Great spot.

Visit Mount Franklin for the day before heading to Daylesford.

07-Dec-13
Found on our trip through the area today. Pic to follow.

01-Apr-13
Came to this one while riding through the area on the motorbike for the day.

13-Jan-13
Have driven passed here a gazillion times and have never seemed to have the time to visit the trig. Today I did on the way to the event in the Ballan.

30-Dec-12
A nice easy one to drive to. Found after nabbing the nearby geocache and EarthCache.

06-May-12
Grabbed a quick kneel at this one whilst doing the nearby GC cache and Earth cache Dancing

08-Jan-12
Yet another visit to this peaceful spot. This time for a trig point, a GC cache and an earthcache. No a bad effort to claim all three so close together.

Photo shows BBTD and geofriends at the TP beneath the firespotters tower.

Slowly learning not to walk past a trig point wothout taking a quick pic. We achieved this while completing the earthcache and finding Maccamob's hidden treasure. Photo to follow. Cheers

Found by The Empire + H @ 1:55pm
13th of 18 caches found today. After a scramble around looking for a maccamob cache, I shot this one in the rain. Another trig to the list.

We were in the area doing a recently published Earthcache and decided to log this trig point as well. Not content for a picture at GZ, these 2 monkeys had to climb it as well. A beautiful spot with spectactular views that we never tire of.

Found by Roma and Max.
Up here on another geo mission today and we chose a beautiful spring morning to visit.
Excellent view of the countryside from this platform!

22-Sep-10
Second trigpoint find of our driving holiday around Northern Victoria, and this ones' a ripper. Combined with maccamob's nearby cache made it 2 for one, and the view made it all worthwhile.

16-Sep-10
Out and about with fellow walkers of the Essendon Bushwalking club picking up a few caches in the area enroute from Hepburn Springs to Mt Franklin and return.
A lot of tracks were closed due to storm damage and we walked in areas where there were a lot of trees down.
Now if we could have had a better view it would have been good, but the walk around the crater was spekky enough.

I drove right up to the top within a couple of metres. Rain was not going to dampen the spirits so I jumped out the car and took a couple of snaps. tftt

Found by caughtatwork at 3:32.
A quick look at the GPS as we were driving past showed us this TP. Given there was sign pointing to it from the road below we felt comfortable that it would be accessible so we headed up the road to see what we could see.
After a bumpy journey we arrived at the topof Mt Franklin to spy the TP in all it's glory. A nice easy cache to find once we got there Smile
Thanks to Geocaching Australia for listing these caches. A great detour to see some great, but slightly obstructed views from the top.

Found 4.00pm
Another mountain that we have been to the top of before to find a nearby cache. This trig is now very redundant as the usual black cross plates are barely visible from anything but a few feet away.
