Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Access: Best from the north off Boggy Creek Rd, at S29º 4.744' E153º 15.278', and follow the well graded dirt road to a sign at a fork in the road @ S29º 6.175' E153º 14.771' where you take the left-hand unmaintained dirt, deeply rutted track to the "Towers".

After two days on a mini road trip and Trig adventuring south of the Sunshine State I decided to head north back over the border to try to get to one of the many unpublished Trigs I’ve discovered up there.. but first I wanted to visit this one. Being a Sunday I figured it was the best day to do it so I took the opportunity and headed towards GZ. Driving towards this one through the quarry I think Sunday is probably the ONLY option. Lots of work going on here. I eventually arrived at the tower and parked the geo-van. I wandered over to the Trig. It looks like it’s had a recent fresh coat of paint however I’m always a little disappointed when I see a capped Trig. But, it’s a lot finer than the galvanised pipes you get in Queensland (if you’re lucky!) Sad but true haha. Images taken and time to move on. I didn’t want to hang around here. Lots of ‘unWelcome’ signs on the way in.

My next stop I saw a galvanised pipe Trig (oh Queensland, you could have learned a lot from your southerly neighbour) and the biggest snake I’ve seen in the wild and I’ve seen lots..

Thanks for the generous instructions and thanks for the cache Smile

I took a drive after work today to visit the Moonimba trig. I followed the instructions of my learned cachers and approached from the Boggy Creek Road direction. There is a small sign at the Moonimba Quarry turnoff and a short stretch of bitumen road. The dirt road is indeed well graded and lulled me onto a false sense of security. I took the right hand fork when I reached the private property signs near the residence. Travelling onwards past the office and piles of earth from the quarry, I saw signs towards the towers and took a further two left forks. The road to the towers looked okay at first but soon became rocky and rutted. I doubted my sanity in a two wheel drive but I was committed or should be committed and could not turn back. I was concerned at one stage that I might get stuck on trench across the track. At times I drove with one wheel on the middle of the road when the wheel tracks looked a little deep. There would be a long and lonely weekend before hope of rescue. I was relieved to reach the towers and find that there was an area to turn around. I found the trig station and took my photos. The vanes on the trig have since been removed. I'm glad that I approached the towers in good daylight and on a dry day.

I’ve had my eye on this one for a while, and as I was working in Coraki today, I thought I’d make a slight deviation and see if I could site this trig. Just as Cookie said, there are signs claiming that the area is private property, but there’s a quarry there so as long as you stick on the road you’re doing no wrong. A bloke working near the quarry gave me a friendly wave as I drove past. I followed the signs that pointed to the towers, and it wasn’t long and I was up on top of the hill.

It was just spitting rain, but my 2WD Hyandai i35 made it up there no worries. There were a few people at the big tower performing repairs to one of the buildings. They waved as I drove and parked at the lesser tower, which was also close to the trig.

Photos and formalities were done quite quickly. The trig is in good condition. Nice to see the name plate is still intact. The view from up here would be awesome, if it wasn’t almost completely blocked by trees. The small slits of landscape that you can see are breath taking.

On a return trip from Lismore to Taree I tried to find a way to the New Italy Area trig from the West, from Bungawalbin Whiporie Rd, without success. I then tried from Boggy Creek Rd, which still had some water over it from the heavy rains on Saturday. The first property had noone at home, but then a farmer/shooter, that had been further back on it stopped by as I was leaving, and pointed me to the turnoff just up the road, @ S29º 4.745' E153º 15.278', which goes to the transmitter towers.
While there is a sign saying 'No Entry - Private Property' this road is access to a quarry, and as such is public access; so don't digress onto the private property of the house. At S29º 6.175' E153º 14.771' there is a sign at a fork in the road, so take the one to the TOWERS!
It gets quite rutted, so caution is required, especially if in a lower suspended vehicle, but I got my 2wd Nissan Dualis up there.
The trig is on the northern end of the ridge (Found @ 1540), just past a smaller tower; with intact plastic pole, black semi-circular vanes, and nameplate showing:
CENTRAL MAPPING AUTHORITY
GEODETIC STATION
MOONIMBAH
On the southern end of the ridge, past the higher tower, is good views to the East.

Changing the trigpoint name from "New Italy Area", to, "Moonimbah", as stated on the name plate.
