Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I was chatting with geo-buddy dahumbug about all things geocaching and trig stations entered the conversation. Ol' dahumbug is an adventurer at heart so this sparked significant interest. I mentioned this Mount Moorooreerai trig site has been on my to-visit list for a while as it's never been visited which increased my curiosity. He said 'let's do it', I said 'giddy-up!'

An early morning meeting in Nambour where we met for coffee. There may or may not have been more than one. We discussed a wikiloc trail he found and the survey notes I downloaded from QLD Globe. With the preparation done it was time to get to this mountain! After driving along Marys Creek Road we found trails heading up in the direction we wanted to go. They were in good condition so we followed them. With the geo-van parked safely it was time to start walking. It didn't take long to arrive at the ridge line I wanted to follow which matched the wikiloc trail. The first three quarters of the off-track walk was easy and pleasant but then lantana entered our day. I f*#ken hate lantana. We both had cutting tools so it didn't take long to get through it even though the closer we got to the summit, the thicker it got. The wikiloc trail went slightly around the peak.

We arrived at the summit and sat down for a rest. I checked the listed coordinates and we were less than 20m away from GZ with nothing to see. I said we'll wait for coordinates to settle then we can search around them.. geo-buddy wasn't waiting though.. snip snip snip slash "I found a pyramid thing!" Even though I was only a few metres away from where he was I couldn't see anything except lantana.. let's have a look.. awesome, wow, good job!! The frame was in surprisingly good condition. The discs however had rusted away long ago. We spent some time ripping lantana away from it so we could get some photos. While doing this I explained more on how these stations were used and the class differences. I mentioned this trig was a first class station so there was a brass plug under the centre point of the frame....... all of a sudden geo-buddy starts furiously digging.. "we need to find this pin!" I believe there is now another Queensland based trig-hunter I can share adventures with! Brass plug found and more images taken.

It was time to return to the van and get back to Nambour. Pub meals and celebration beers soon followed before I got myself to camp, at night in the dark, it's what I do haha. A great trig discovery and a great day out with fellow geocacher and now trig-hunter, dahumbug.
Thanks for the cache Smile

wayn0 gave me a whole pile of options... and I went for this one.
Who wouldnt want to go find some unused trig point that was installed January 1940...some 83 years ago.

We actually had a wikiloc trail to follow which got us a pretty good starting point.
We even snuck up the firetrail in the Delica and saved us a small walk, but a walk was inevitable in the end.
We reached the end of the road before we found some lantana to deal with, and turn up the ridge line.
The walk up the ridge line was fairly easy off trail walking until a sea of lantana was upon us.
Without a boat to float over the sea it was easier to surf the edges of the prickly vine.
We were able to float around the edges for a bit of slow bush bashing until about 150m away from GZ.
The garden pruners came in with a vengeance then.
Snipping...pruning...cutting...hacking.
We got through it near the listed coordinates to see nothing.
Everything was overgrown and it didnt look very good.
I checked my phone and headed towards GZ.

Oi mate...whats that pyramid thing 9m over there?
We found a very good condition trig point frame.
wayn0 mention there maybe a brass pin bedded into concrete.
I went to work like a human excavator...and what do you know...we found a survey pin.

Only a newbie to trig hunting...I felt a great buzz from this find.

Thank you for the trig point.
Thank you for wayn0 for invite to do something.
