A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I thought the previous day's wet weather would make this a messy affair, but the trails leading to the larger trails were no problem. It was aless than 10 minutes walk from the car and a little less to get back, thanx to gravity.

Found today for the GeosportZ 2024 game.
This is one of the simpler TP's to find, the only real challenge is that bloody hill!
Regardless, this was a fun cache to head to today and there are a couple of photos attached to my log.
Thanks Geocaching Australia.
TP's are fun!

Great views from the lookout unfortunately it was a bit overcast. Lots of hills up and down

It's been a while since I've found a physical GCA cache and this trig point was one I noted while in the area.
Up the hill and to the structure and a few photos were taken before I departed.
All looks to be structurally sound with a bit of graffiti the only minor issue.

Many times have I visited this Trig Point. For a while there I was actually the CO of the other geocache here.
Somehow I have not yet managed to log this one, but I dare say I have a few photos taken here over the past six years.

#GA2536 - 09:10; After driving down to Melbourne to bring the geostudent and her friend back for uni, Sol de lune flew in to join me for a days caching and the return journey to Canberra. Our plan was to make finds in as many of the dragonZones in which we were yet to make a find as we could. Today the plan was to head south to Kingston, then on to Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula before heading back north to Monash and a few other zones before wrapping up the day in Stonnington. After stopping to place some caches in Kingston, we headed on to this trig in Frankston. It was a pleasant walk in on an overcast morning and I soon had the required snaps in the bag. Found this one a while ago whilst on a pokemon go egg hatching run. I do love a good trig point and this I believe was as of the time my closest unfound trig point. Well that was another one done now to head off and continue on my adventure. I realise I have a bit of GCA back log at the moment so now to go and log them whilst I am on a relaxing break at uni.

Like others, parked in reserve and took the 500 odd metre walk up to GZ. No problems and photo was soon taken.

A very late log. I took a very long stroll early on Christmas morning and an unrelated cache brought me to this neck of the woods. This is a very familiar feature but this was my first visit while I was aware of geocaching.

13-Nov-15
Today, whilst caching in the Frankston area, we came across this trig point. Two photos have been added to the Gallery: Mrs y'stassie standing next to the beacon; and the survey marker below the centre of the beacon.

When I first could see the trig the GPSr read 250m and I thought that can't be right, as it only looked to be 100 m away, but the dip and rise of the hill was deceptive. Sure enough, 2½ minutes risk walking later I was right there. Well preserved quadrapod trig typical of Victoria.

In the general area for some R&R, it was time to knock a couple more trig points off the list. This was the first for the day and after a bit of a slog up the sandy wheel ruts that constituted a track, we were at GZ at 15:15 for the money shot on this glorious afternoon. The difference between the landscape we were at and the beautifully groomed version only 50 metres to the west couldn't be any more pronounced Shocked.

It's hard to believe that this hasn't been visited in over a year Shocked.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

Found while on a caching run with trailrunning and his geokids. This is one place I would never have gone to without a car. My first survey marker too. TFTC:)

jsmyong55 emailed me last night and asked if I was caching today. I answered yes to we arranged to meet at Swinburne Uni in Hawthorn and head south to do some cache neither of us had done before. With the Geokids in the back seat making the usual noises we were off and ended up in this area, where a number of caches were found. We walked up the hill as part of another cache in the area and photographed the kids standing under the trig. thanks

My first GCA cache. For me this one is special.

This place is called Trig Point, or at least it was locally when I was growing up. As a kid, I was obsessed with a children's science fiction TV show called The Tomorrow People - some might say I still am as I travelled to England for a Tomorrow People convention two years ago.I dreamed of being a tomorrow person - the next stage of human evolution. As a kid I lived in what was then a naval housing estate just near the entry to this reserve. In the Tomorrow People, the great alien government that ruled the galaxy and watched earth's development was called the Galactic Trig. I used to imagine Trig Point was obviously linked to them and it was where they were watching me from as a potential Tomorrow Person. I was a kid. I dreamed. And this cache took me back there.

Came after the (no-longer) nearby cache and remembered I had this one on the to-do-list too Smile As usual, my photos are taken using the GPS's built-in camera so it's not in frame. (I haven't checked but hopefully the geotag data follows through in the resized image?)

A few climbing sundews (Drosera macrantha) nearby for the botanically-minded (my photo was blurry Sad)- I've only seen them growing on the highest sand hills here and at Langwarrin too.

Love it when your able to get 2 for the price of 1!
Came to the area to grab another cache from the other website, and this was nearby too!

This Trigonometric Station is located in The Pines Flora and Fauna Reserve. Parking is available at S38 07.509 E145 09.830 (Excelsior Drive), with a park information board and map located in a small shelter nearby.

Being a surveyor, I've looked up the details for this trigonometric station using the Survey Marks Enquiry Service (SMES), and have been able to find it's formal and alternative name. Therefore, I have elected to change the name of this TrigPoint cache to 'Old Pines - Frankston PM 396', rather than keeping the generic name 'Kananook Area'.

Mark Name: Frankston PM 396
Alternate Name: Old Pines
Mark Number: 261903960
Stamped ID: 59002
Status: OK
Beacon: Yes
Lat/Long: S38 07’ 47.3402†E145 09’47.6186â€
UTM: E339014.346 N5778187.810
Reduced Level (Height): 69.140m

Surveyors use these trig stations and beacons, and are considered the absolute prime survey markers – the beacons being placed over them so that they can be seen and observed to by theodolites from great distances. Nowadays, with the widespread use of accurate differential GPS systems by surveyors, many of these beacons are now left to become overgrown.

My walk here today was brisk, knowing (and seeing) that a rain band was swiftly making it's way across the bay! With Mrs38 currently having the GPSmap60CSx with her overseas, I had to make use of the carnav Nuvi250W to find and confirm my find (see photo’s). My visit was at 1pm. TFTC!

Regards, 38 degrees south.

Found @1400.
After parking the goemobile i headed of to GZ on a nice easy stroll on a nice board walk the on to a nice little sandy track through the bush land then when i came to a clearing i saw something that was not in my liking a nice sandy hill that had had a 4WD chewwing it up so it made for a bit of a slog up the hill but it was worth it in the end.
I will attach a profile of the hill soon.
