Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Obey the sign a bout maintenance vehicles. If you drive drive up (like I did) you may come to a locked gate and no room to turn around. As I approached I wondered where the trig was...it was hiding in plain sight, in front of towers, fences abd the like.

Great views, well worth the trip up to the top of Mount Ida.

Thanks for this trig Dancing

I think if you were able to drive up here the terrain might only be 2, but to walk up here this old septuagenarian would rate it much higher. The view from on top was worth the climb though.
No GPS in the picture as it's being used to take the photo of me at the trig point.
Thanks for giving me a good reason to drag this old bag of bones up here

Came up this bloody hill (again) looking for the final of a multi (again)... it wasn't as dark as last time, but still a bust.

Except...

I remembered to log the Trig point!!

Walked up with the kids, had a look around whilst they played on the rocks.
Views are great, but unfortunately there was no brass plate under the Trig marker.

I liked the walk up the hill, from the top I could see all the little people and their houses

08-Oct-11
Found while searching for nearby GC cache. Sat on a rock under trig for a while while I waited for Greg to return as terrain was a little rough for me.

This is another one that I'm post-logging because I was there with the walking group and coincidentally had the group pickie taken at the trig point Very Happy. (Once again, the day and month are correct but I've changed the year to protect the first-to-finder Wink.)

It was a bit of a dirty day but the rain held off and we even had some great views across the plains from on top of the range.

Thanks once again Geocaching Australia.

As I drove the geomobile along the main road below, I kept a lookout for any roads that might lead me closer.
Hey !! There's one !! Very Happy
This looks like another easy drive by trig-point find Cool

The caching gods were angry with me though Shocked
I had not gotten enough exercise this week and my laziness credits were overdrawn Embarassed
So the caching gods had arranged for a large tree to fall across the road to the lookout only 400 metres from the picinic area Surprised

I got the message Laughing
Returning to the picinic area, I abandoned the geomobile and wandered off through the scrub in an upwardly direction.
Every two paces I walked into a spider web.
Eventually I got onto the rockier ridgeline and got to see more views and less spiders Dancing

At the top of the hill there was just me.
The firetower had its shutters closed and the aircon unit in the nearby hut was hummin' to itself Very Happy

Walking up here is definitely the best way to appreciate this place Clapping

Found just on dusk. Also had a close encounter with a roo who did not want to get off the road!

We had a checkpoint for our rogaine near the entrance gate only 100mtrs away. There was not a chance I was going to not log this TP.
A great view from the top and an even better ride down on the treadly.

Found by Roma and Max.
Parked at the gate and were tempted to drive around as others have done but then decided we needed the excercise!

We've been her a couple of times before and we always love the views. The trig is a slightly easier find than the cache. TFTC

Wow, it was windy up the top here today but well worth it to get the 360 deg views on the steep walk up to the trig.

26-Apr-10
On the way back home from the Central Victorian Get Together event in Echuca we made the quick detour to this trig point. It was quite steep walking going up the top.
Unfortunately it was around 10:30pm and VERY dark so we didn't get to see much of a view.

23-Sep-09
After an enforced couple of days in Melbourne,it was good to escape the rat race and head bush. Of course, along the way home I had to pass by Mount Ida, so a short detour was in order.

Although I've been to this spot a number of times, this is the first time I've actually stopped and looked at the trig marker. Unfortunately there is no benchmark/height at the trig marker. There are, however, some great views of the surrounding countryside.

All quiet at GZ apart from thump, thump of a passing medical helicopter, and the sound of a vehicle as it headed back down from the carpark near the summit.

Luckily there is a pine post just near the trig point that served well as a camera stand. Photo taken, then back down the hill and off home.

Waz.
