Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

With the country going into lockdown & meat / chicken / rice & dunny paper in short supply I figured it was time to go for a caching run & drop of some movables & complete some caches, needed to clear my head as job insecurity is of real concern & I had enough of the bullshit – so cache on – this was the 2nd 1 completed after dropping off the movables. Walked up the hill & took the shots - a very nice view from up here – many thanks for the drive today enjoyed it

My final day in the Queanbeyan/Canberra for the ‘Clear Waters’ event. Sad Unfortunately I need to go as I have other things on starting tomorrow and for the rest of the week. Sad On the other hand, I have loved my few days away, catching up and meeting people, attending my first mega, visiting places I have never been before and the time away from home. Big Grin Today’s mission is to collect most cache types in a day. I started with the Memorial Virtual cache out the road. Next was the Mega and Lab caches. Then it went WherIGo, Letter Box, Earth, Multi, Trad, Mystery and to finish off, a Trig-Point. That is 10 cache types for me today. 9 GC types and 1 GCA type. Big Grin I loved all the challenges that the lab caches provided me. Also I loved meeting new people and catching up with others and collecting many TB’s. Big Grin I am also thankful that I didn’t need to do that tree climb in the middle of the showground again. I DID IT IN 2016 but even after showing them my log, no one believed me. I also avenged pass DNF’s while here at the mega. Big Grin After I had finished my caching trail for today, I ended up getting home by 7pm today. I would like to thank all CO’s for the caches I found and for the allowing them to bring joy to me and others. Big Grin TFTC’s, TFTTP's and TFTE! Big Grin

Rode up to the trig from the free camp on the river. Sadly nothing left here of the trig but some pieces of cement and a survey marker.... But since we had to ride up the hill to get here, in our opinion a trig can impersonate whatever it likes. Laughing TFTC Geocaching Australia

Found the place where the trig once was. Great views. TFTC

07-May-17
Parked nearby and wandered up the hill to find where the old trig must have been. Awesome views from up here.

06-Feb-17
A drive by trig. Don't get many of them. It would even be possible to open the car door and take a photograph of the trig, without getting out.

04-Mar-16
Day five of our month long escape from Tassie. On our way from Gundagai to Yass today and picking up some of the caches along the way. Didn't find the traditional trig, must have been removed at some point. TFTC

29-Dec-15
GrimRaider and I came out to Yass for the morning to grab some caches and we made our way up here so I could bag the trig. We found the hollow in the grass with concrete and bits and pieces but no sign of the yellow survey marker. May have gone?? Thanks anyway Very Happy

Found late last night on my way home from visiting the father in law for his birthday.

I too didn't find an actual trig but maybe where it once stood. I drove around in circles on the dark looking for it. The neighbours probably thought i was doing doughies.haha

05-Jun-15
before i started my 5 hr drive out west i started here had to move the grass to find it but

Headed up the hill while staying in Yass tonight. No luck finding the actual plate today as the area is pretty overgrown, but managed to put my foot on some of the rubble of the structure. Hoped to do better but them's the breaks.

07-Oct-14
Stayed in Yass for two days caching around.

06-Oct-14
Found on our Tumut trip. We managed to drive up the steep road towards GZ, where we were presented with no trig! We could see pieces of junk around, but no clear trig. So we took a photo of the general area. Lovely views from up here. TFTC GCA! Clan CerberusClan CerberusClan Cerberus

#GA114 - 18:55; After grabbing a couple of caches on Mt Ainslie, I headed down the Barton Highway to clear a few more between Canberra and Yass and, with any luck, maybe fill another hole in the D/T matrix too. I made the detour off the highway to pick up a couple in Murrumbateman, then on towards Yass. Picked up a couple after a short detour down a side road and another couple on the way into town. This one wasn't on the list I'd prepared for the mission, but I'd abandoned that and was moving along picking up 'nearest to' caches from the latest find. Found a convenient park for a short walk to the summit and the obligatory photo was taken. TFTC GA Very Happy

A quick visit to this one while in Yass. A little sad to see not much here.

08-Jan-14
stopped here on our caching day trip to yass.

07-Jan-14
As others have noted there's not much to see here. I was thinking I was in the wrong spot until I saw the survey mark cover. It looks like the original plinth has been removed and the base broken up.

25-Sep-13
Found while looking for GC caches in Yass.
Another one logged and ticked off the list.

So long since this one has been found and it is such a short walk to it. Found the yellow survey marker in the ground a couple of metres away from what is left of the actual trig. Thanks.

27-Apr-12
Day eleven of our excursion out of Tasmania touring from Melbourne to Canberra and return via Gippsland was marked by the very dense fog in Canberra but this cleared very quickly into clear blue skies and virtually no wind – excellent caching conditions. We started by looking for a couple of puzzle caches in Canberra (plus some traditional along the way) and then we headed north to Yass, caching only in the New South Wales part of the drive. Again we had a very enjoyable touring and caching day.

We were lucky with this cache as most of the grass had been slashed - it was only the last 20m to the cache where the grass was knee length. When our GPS said 0m we were at the remnants of the trig point - not much left there now. Great views over the surrounding valleys from this vantage point. TFTC

Hmmm, normally don't need to use a GPS once on the same hill as a trig, this time I needed to as the remnants well hidden in the grass. Not a lot left. Still good views though.

GCA 315 - 4573. Found this Trig (?) during our run around the Yass region.

TFTC !!

Yep, not much left here now, but you can see where it was.

Ok.....i guess this used to be a trig, so sure..it counts. why not?

Grabbed this one on the way home from wee jasper (ok, this is just a scenic detour so i can grab some more caches..)

01-Oct-11
Not much of this trig left now. Found a piece of concrete and took a photo of a nearby tower

30-Sep-11
I wouldn't really count this as a Trig - more of a "there once used to be a trig on this spot"

17-Jul-11
Grabbed this one today while finishing off my unfound Yass caches after visiting the in-law's and dropping the Geokids off. Great views and I could have made this one a drive-by but choose to walk the last 50m.

20-May-11
One of the few unfound 'caches'in Yass for me, so out here with GeoMum, I convinced her to take the back roads to check out the views.

SHe piked at walking to the cache however, muttered something about hosiery and high heels not being compatible with the long grasses and uneven ground on the way to GZ.

What a slacker!!! Laughing

Not much at GZ, but the views are worthwhile.

19-Dec-10
Found this spot this morning. My photographer refused to walk through the long grass to where I was standing on the concrete remnants. Other logged photos show an area almost devoid of grass, but not so now.

26-Sep-10
Was driving through and decided to grab the local Trig. On arriving Just a Cacher commented on its' prominence in the lovely vista but we managed to find the remains and the survey marker that is now the Trig point. A shame to its demise.

28-Aug-10
Found with McPhan.

121. On the way to Parkes to visit the dish and just had to come out to grab this one. Very easy Trig to get to and some top views from here.

TFTC and the yes.

24-Jul-10
Visited the trig after the final whistle.
U16s playing the Red Back. A really great game played in good spirit with skill and daring.
Made for exciting viewing.
Final score 3-1 our way.

Found the trig. Just a survey mark and cap left of it if there ever was a tripod.
The view is probably at its best approaching sunset as we saw it.

01-Apr-10
Located on the trip to the Mega Event in Wagga. The Trig station is no longer there but the survey marker survives.

23-Dec-09
Not much left here to see here today. Not even any sheep. Maybe it will be set up again one day. Albida.

08-Nov-09
Found on my caching tour of the south west. When I arrived a mob of sheep were guarding it but they moved on. The trig is no more, just a few cement slabs & a piece of grey & orange steel. Oh dear.
