Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Logs

A beautiful day on the range today, with the fog clearing out mid-morning. This was our lunch spot for the day and we snapped a trig photo while we were there. Great place and definitely recommend the walk, although long pants, long sleeves and gardening gloves are a must. TFTT

10-May-14
A second visit by one of us in Winglen, and still the views were completely clouded in. Poor old trig has seen better days.

837. Found during a long long day out along the ridge line. Poor things has seen better days and was having a bit of a lie down when we came upon it. So we roused it from its slumber and proceeded to manhandle it for posterity.

TFTT and the glimpse.

Found with mtrax on a hike to score 2 FTFs by Cankid! Found his cache, and there was a bonus right here - can't complain about that!

The older wooden trig didn't fair well after the bush fires.
but the concrete base still exists.
Found with Tankengine around 11:am

Found while up here. Great views. Got a picture or two and hid a cache. It is sad that the trig was destroyed and the marker is melted.

From now on, I will definitely be carrying a camera at every trig point I visit. I really support the introduction of TrigPoint "caches" because there are usually great views from such highpoints and it is particularly applicable in certain parks.

When I first started caching, I often didn't carry a camera, and visited many trigs whilst caching.

However, whether the thought police like it or not, I intend to claim every trig that I visited since starting caching at the beginning of 2007. As evidence, I will either post the photo if I have one, or reference the cache that I visited nearby, or name another cacher who can vouch for me being there.

No photo of this trig - it doesn't really exist in its original state anymore - perhaps there is a piece of metal still buried at the site. Visited this location when visiting Canberra Horizon cache and placing some other caches along this ridge. Tidbinbilla Peak is fantastic but the trig is a Zero experience

I Agree with Squirrels comments as in other Trig point caches in GCA for the ACT (+ a few extra comments of my own)
When I first started caching, I often didn't carry a camera, (Digital cameras did not exist)and visited many trigs whilst caching. I also visited many trigs BEFORE geocaching even existed, when I was riding my Mountain bike/s in the 1990's, so all recent finds.
I actually visited this trig point while doing a nearby cache, "Canberra's Horizon" 30/12/2004, and while laying my cache "The Pimple" 17/1/2009 AND doing the three Squirrel caches up there Tidbinbilla Traipse, Squirrels Paek & Arabian Caravan 26/1/2009. The Trig marjker at Tidbinbilla Peak was destroyed by the Jan 2003 fires, but its still there, just all over the ground as my pic shows.
