Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

09-Jul-21
Was tempted but decided to obey the sign and moved on...

27-Jan-18
We turned around at the unwelcoming sign and did not go to look for this Trig Point Crying or Very sad

24-Nov-16
I hesitated when I saw 'that' sign, but forged ahead, parked and took a walk. Lovely view from this trig. I'm guessing the signage is why there have been no logs for this trig since 2014.

09-Jun-14
Good views back across the bay. Did this one on the way home after a very enjoyable weekend at Strahan.

10-Feb-14
Sainted at 1630hrs. Enjoyed the walk through the button grass.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

04-Nov-13
A short walk in the rain and we were at what remains of this trig. Thanks.

05-Oct-13
Nabbed while doing a sweep of caches in Strahan.
Bucketing down with rain so belted across and back to get it and naturally got soaked Laughing

04-Jul-12
The Trig is on Crown Land with best access off the private road to fish farm...which I'm sure they wouldn't mind as long as you park well to the side. I changed its name to the one in LIST...which makes more sense than its previous name. TFTC...Cheers.

We were hoping to log this cache but the road to GZ has a big sign stating "Private Road, Petuna Aquaculture" so we decided that discretion was the better part of valour and drove on by. Aquaculture is a very valuable part of Tasmania's economy and I can imagine that the owners would be quite protective of their sites. TFTC

02-Jan-12
Found with Tassie Trekkers while holidaying on the west coast. TFTT.

02-Jan-12
Found on our West Coast Wilderness holiday with whitewebbs. While staying at Strahan we found several caches in the area and this was one of them.

26-Dec-10
Driving towards this trig point we came across a gate......was it private property or not? There were no signs around to indicate that it was so we kept driving. Pulling up at the safest spot to start walking to the trig a car went past us and looked at us strangely....let's hope he doesn't shut the gate on his way out.... We wandered off to the trig. Not much there but did fing the marker. The area had been burnt a while ago so there was no scrub to walk through which made a pleasant change. Thanks for bringing us here. Another part of Tas I wouldn't have seen if not for caching.

26-Dec-10
Found after driving down the road and stopped within about 150m of the trig.
We also found the concrete pads and also found the fourth.
I don't believe there was a trig structure here - the pads only had steel fence posts in them.
Took picture. Left footprints.

Before going to this location, we were very surprised that no-one had submitted a log for this trig point - we thought that it must have been very difficult access. We were able to get within about 300m by car. Getting to the site was made much easier by a fire (presumeably last summer) which had totally wiped out the vegetation - the reeds and grasses were just starting to shoot. When we got to GZ we found three pads of concrete with the remains of the steel cut off at pad height - presumeably a quite large trig point structure had been removed sometime ago. We also found the trig marker embedded in the ground and a stake with the trig marker identification number.
