Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Lots of water and mud still on the track to get here today but a fun drive Smile

Nearing the end of a great weekend of adventuring. Both days my plans were forced to change. Both days my Plan Bs were a wonderful diversion. It’s close to dark here now. I’ll grab a nearby GC Traditional Cache which I’ll be the first to find on but won’t log it as a first to find haha, it’s what I do. It’s a long story. Nearly three hours of driving to get home. A Perfect opportunity to continue an excellent audiobook I’m part way through. Endgame - Bobby Fischer. This book has reignited a lost passion for Chess. It’s great to play again.
Thanks for the cache.

Visiting some other caches near Cooyar so decided to do a bit of off road driving and visited this trig point. This the first one we have been to, great location.

Taking the long wag home from Blackbutt this arvo picking up some caches as we go. Some great glimpses across the hills as we went along East Cooyar Rd then Shimmel Rd. Able to drive right up to the tower today. Can only imagine what the view would be like from the top of the tower. Thankfully the weather has been very dry as I wouldn't like to try this road in the wet in a conventional sedan.

Made it up to the tower this morning via East Cooyar and Schimmel roads. It was an easy drive in good conditions. A real pity that the fun police have stopped access to the tower - the view from the top would be stunning. Cheers, Bindair Dundat and the Princess.

FTF at 1030 on a good winters day. I attempted this one once before. After not following where the GPSr wanted me to go as the road did not exist in reality. The last time I got to within 200meters of where GZ should have been but the track was washed out and I do not have a 4WD and it was raining so I did not do the walk. This time the track was dry and if you drive slowly and to the road conditions you can get all the way to GZ in a 2WD. Once you arrive there is this massive Forestry fire Watch Tower with Prohibited entry signs on it. The GPSr took me to a post right in the centre of the Triangular base of the legs of the tower. The actual trig point must be way up on the roof of the structure at the top. If you have a 4wd you should be albe to access this via Bum Bum Creek Road but the signs on this road state Dry weather access only but when i had a look it was pretty damp so I attacked by the taking the East Cooyer Road exit off the New England Highway that is closest to Bum Bum Creek road and then drove along an unsigned good gravel track along the ridge line till i entered the forestry. Have fun.TFTC
