Description

McAlister TS2917

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: McAlister.

Serial number is: TS2917.

Last inspected on: No Data.

Elevation is: 1034 meters.

This a concrete pillar with no beacon, the vanes are on the ground around the base.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I thought it was a bit odd that Just a cacher & Black Bunny didn’t do the walk up to the top. I had every intension to do the walk to the top. When I arrived at the gate & looked at the boundary bard wire fence with no gaps or holes to fit through well, I like taking chances in life but I had no excuse or story to tell if asked what I was up to – so took the shots from gate – I hope 1 day we can walk to the top again - thanks

I was here a month or so ago, but was reluctant to go over the gate and walk up the hill. Today was a different matter.

Easy drive out and a quick 150m up to the trig. Nice views from up here !

Saw that this trig was 'nearby' and hadn't been found in a while so headed out for the find. Was confronted by a locked gate 200m from the trig. With no trig in sight and no other movement around, I climbed over and ascended the hill. Found the trig and an amazing view. Pity I didn't really have time to appreciate it.

On the return from a Goulburn trig and train spotting trip with rogerw3 ... a drive along the potholed lanes to the gateway to the aviation tower, the 'mushroom first of the idea this was the trigpoint. The insistence of rogerw3 and a short walk up the hill and the trig sighted over the crest - sans mast and vanes, on the ground nearby, but with nameplate intact, with great view across the way.
