Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Out doing one of the "Walk Canberra's 100 Suburbs" walks - this time it was Oxley, officially Canberra's smallest suburb , but has a nice big hill with a trig and the walk route goes right past. No GPS device these days so took a pic of the actual trig point with my parkrun card, after some excavation to remove heaps of grass and dirt. Looks like I can only upload one photo so will include the close-up of the trig point only.

Found on dusk after 2 days caching in ACT. Came up for the nearby traditional, not knowing there was a trig point here. Pleased to score another trig in Canberra.
Photo is a panorama view taken from under the trig point. looking across to the Tuggeranong town area, taken at dusk. Beats Smile than another boring old trig photo.
Very Happy

It's all about the bear and the trigs.

Not logged for almost a year, so just had to venture up, admire the views, grab a cache, and then went for a pleasant stroll around the lake.

Oxley Trig.
I have been here several times.
It is about time that I brought a camera with me.

The weird thing about trigs is that they are often don't share the name of the hill that they are on. This trig is called "Tuggeranong"
Tuggeranong Hill has a trig called "TG 84"

Included is a section form my copy of the 1912 parish map.

Walked up this hill at night. Wonderful calm place above the busy light of the city and below the clear and cold sky. Recommendable as a night walk.

We were in the area on geocaching business. We had to wait for others to leave before we could log this but it allowed us to enjoy the sunset over Tuggeranong. This is obviously a popular spot given the lovely view and it was great to come here on sunset.

I'm going to echo McPhan's comment of Loooooooooooooooooooong grass, and warm weather, what could go wrong?

no seriously. this grass is pretty much taller than me. what could go wrong? oh god oh god oh god. Tams, please mow/backburn the grass. Please..

parked at what i thought would be the best way to get up there, then thought "...yep, maybe i'll take the long way.." and ran around the other way.
Found a load of lizards around the place as well! Good thing i did choose the path! :S

20-Jun-10

20-Jun-10
Easiest one so far. Can practically drive to it.

13-Jun-10
I was in the area for some caches and strolled over to log the trig point. Some trigs have been quite challenging but this one was relatively straight-forward - once I found the right hill! For some reason, this is one of the trigs that my GPS refuses to show, and on my initial approach the trig was obscured the trees. So I walked up the wrong peak, but spotted the trig from there. Fortunately its only a short, easy walk across...

02-Apr-10

From now on, I will definitely be carrying a camera at every trig point I visit. I really support the introduction of TrigPoint "caches" because there are usually great views from such highpoints and it is particularly applicable in certain parks.

When I first started caching, I often didn't carry a camera, and visited many trigs whilst caching.

However, whether the thought police like it or not, I intend to claim every trig that I visited since starting caching at the beginning of 2007. As evidence, I will either post the photo if I have one, or reference the cache that I visited nearby, or name another cacher who can vouch for me being there.

I own the "Oxley Rock Hopping" geocache on the same hilltop, and have been to this trig many times.

2009-10-17 Popped by to check on my nearby cache, and decided to get a photo for this trigpoint

This would be a *FTF* riding home from a cache finding mission, spied this trig nearby, thought, why not, then rode/walked up the hill and just about had bike blown away - SUPER windy. Nice views of Tuggeranong town centre and storm looming over Tidbinbilla ranges.
