Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Second time up here, taking a different route from the water treatment plant. Fantastic views.

Found with the geo family on a great trip to the capital and Victoria...

We had to ge the shot from the road to the south as we came to it from the wrong direction.

The car's GPS couln't get us to this one, though IO think it thought it could and took us the wrong way.

As I was nearby for the new GC cache I was happy to walk over rather than around brown hill for the cache and this nice trig. Very nice views from here, well worth the short hike.

Visiting Mt Stromlo, and nearby GC cache, when I realise there was a trig point here as well. Anything for another smile...

Found this at 5:45pm with my girlfriend. We took the walk from the Mt Stromlo cache near the fence from the facility and went down the right trail to discover it would be the long way up to the trig and GC cache, so we cut up at a point where we could see the other track going up to the trig. Right near the trig I set off to find the GC cache and after it I went over to the trig and we took the obligatory photos. Absolutely great views from here only if there was snow on the distant mountain peaks could it be better. We then walked back along our path and then back along the fence line to where the gate is and then through it and up the tar lane back to where I had parked the trusty geovehicle.
*Overall Experience: 5*

ok... had coffee at top of Mt Stromlo, with quilting friends... the normal people went home, I went for a walk to get some unfound GC caches... thought about coming Herr but wanted to find some of the GC ones b4 it got dark... it got dark but I kept finding because I was having fun. noticed I had missed one so I came back this way - figured I may as well come for trig in the dark... an about to grab the GC cache too, now that I have sat Herr in the cold wind, snuggled between a couple of rocks, and done a 10 minute mindfulness meditation (with a phone app)
...no - I am NOT normal... and I am having fun!

A great walk around Stromlo today. Have seen this trig multiple times from the road so it was great to finally get up here! TFTT

I noticed the trig up here while snagging up the 1 year and 4 months of unloved on the nearby traditional GC cache so decided to take some snaps of the trig while I was at it!
Walked along the Brown Hill Firetrail to get here.

I have been there to get a GC cache, but just realised I hadn't logged the trig. I stood under the trig. The tricky bit from memory was deciding how to get around the fence.

A nice walk and great views from here

Found on a walk with the Canberra Bushwalk Club. Great views from up here - and the chance to bag a trig and grab a cache. The walk leader kindly waited while we did both. Lovely spot - tftc Smile

12-May-14
Grabbed a pic while up here on a lovely afternoon.

Been up here before doing a GC cache but didn't take a photo of the Trig at the time. Returned, a pleasant if a little long walk, shortened a bit by cutting cross country between fire trails. Great views as usual from the Trig.

3rd and final cache on Mt Stromlo with fishcreekfour this morning. Found while doing the nearby GC. A very long walk, but worth it! Very nice views. TFTC Geocaching Australia! Dancing

393. The second closest to home and has been sneering at me every time I/we drove by. Today was the day to grab this one (got me out of more yardwork). An easy walk as when we(winglen, RexTrex, Zsazsa7 and McPhan)had done the GC cache up here we found the right way - on the way back of course. Some good views and a nice warm spring day. Even managed a bit of colour.

TFTT and the trout.

Last area of the day before heading home. Walked up from the main road as I couldn't resist just doing one more as I drove past. Great views here over the Cotter District. Also retrieved the nearby GC.com cache before heading back down hill. Definitely worth coming here for the views. Photos to be uploaded tonight.

Another nice wander to climb one of the many hills around Canberra. GeoPup was as happy as a dog in mud, especially when she went to have a drink in the dam and the sides gave way . Soggy, muddy dog was NOT amused - but we were!!!!

Well, I'll be, my first GCA log. Was here while doing the Brown Hill GC. This overlooks the Winslade property where I crewed a RFS heavy tanker during the 2003 fires - With the property owners, we did save the place. Now, how do I include my photo......

I Agree with Squirrels comments below (+ a few extra comments of my own)

From now on, I will definitely be carrying a camera at every trig point I visit. I really support the introduction of TrigPoint "caches" because there are usually great views from such highpoints and it is particularly applicable in certain parks.

When I first started caching, I often didn't carry a camera, (Digital cameras did not exist)and visited many trigs whilst caching. I also visited many trigs BEFORE geocaching even existed, when I was riding my Mountain bike/s in the 1990's, so all recent finds.

However, whether the thought police like it or not, I intend to claim every trig that I visited since starting caching at the end of 2001. As evidence, I will either post the photo if I have one, or reference the cache that I visited nearby, or name another cacher who can vouch for me being there.

No photo for this one - but I visited this trig on 30/5/2009 when I visited the "Brown Hill" cache.

Finally catching up on a few trig visits - this one I previously visited as a waymark, so I am using that log: Stopped by today to grab the nearby cache & took the opportunity to visit this waymark as suggested. The weather was quite biting & there had been some rain about, so I still had my hood on...

Following in the footsteps of some more illustrious cachers, Im also logging my find on the trig point, for when I visited the peak to find 2 Leg Drive's Brown Hill (GC) cache.

See http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=e63fb02f-b6cf-41fd-8657-d2f9d989a14d for my log, and Tealby & Mtrax for witnesses.

Great views from up here, I remember it well but especially Tealby's prophetic words, when she asked me if I wanted to get a photo at the trig, just in case I ever took up waymarking. I havent taken up waymarking, but probably should have got the photo...oh well, no harm done.

Cheers

Found while finding a nearby GC geocache! - Lovely views. Another hilltop ticked off!

Happy Mothers Day.

We made it to the top of Brown hill chasing FTF on GC1R349.
Arrived after sun set. Making life hard for ourselves as we are still navigating without the use of GPS. Found the cache in the dark as the moon had slipped behind the clouds then continued up to the trig to appreciate the view.
The stars were bright, pretty lights all around, and the moon shone again as we need to find our way back along the track. Followed by were-cows (it is the full moon) for some of the way down
