Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Please ensure that you take a picture of the trig from the path around the island, DO NOT CLIMB UP TO THE TRIG ITSELF.

I brought the bike on this trip and only took it off the roof a couple of times. It was useful here to get myself to the lighthouse quickly.

A lovely day for a stroll on the island. Thanks for the cache.

Lovely day for a stroll around the island named after the greatx3 grandfather of Mr Greenegrass.

Made the climb up to the TP. Got the photo

31-Aug-19
Stopped at Point Fairy to do some birdwatching. We were able to walk the full loop of Griffiths Island so took this photo from the other side. Beautiful place. TFTT

#GA1963 - 10:55; Day five of a caching mission to Victoria with Sol de lune. The plan for today was to head south through Beaufort to Penshurst, Port Fairy and Warnambool, before heading back via Camperdown and Lismore to Creswick caching all the way. We had reached the furthest point of today's adventure and planned to grab a few of the local caches as well as this trig. TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

With no-one allowed to walk up to the trig, we grabbed our photo's from the car park below. No problems and the trig is easily seen.

Thanks for another trig....

What a fun little trig find! Climbed up here with the kids and took a few snaps. Unfortunately the app crashes when I try to upload a pic so will add one when I get home. Cheers.

Spot it while multi caching at Griffiths Island.
thanks

Spotted this one as we first walked on the island to do the new multi here. Because the signs say don't go there we took the photo from a position on the path as we headed to the lighthouse. Thanks.

Enjoyed the walk around the island but stuck to the track as requested by all the signs. Found that you can get as close as 40m from the actual trig on the beach side without climbing the dune. I reckon that's close enough given the sensitive nature of the dunes and the Shearwater nesting area.

21-Jan-14
Found on our "Making Memories" Tour of mainland Australia.

Today we explored Port Fairy and surrounds using geocaching as our guide.

Took photo from track respecting the locals wishes.

We understand the concerns of the "Friend of Griffiths Island" and we have added a note to the cache page requesting cachers to not climb up to the trig. However, Geocaching Australia can not be held
responsible for the actions of individual people.

We have read that the "Friends of Griffiths Island" President has requested that the trig be moved to another location on the island but as we do not own the trig we are unable to comply with that request.

We chose not to walk to the trig but could see where the dunes might get you there from the beach.

Now seeing the needs archiving note has been placed I am glad that we didn't but we enjoyed our wander around the area.

As a Geocacher and Friend of Griffiths Island member I can appreciate the amazing location that this cache has been placed in, however the access to the trig point is through a Shearwater nesting area, and the Friends of Griffiths Island President has requested that it be moved to another location on the island that does not hinder the the birds. Please note that the island is not meant to be crossed by the general public and that they are requested to stick to the paths.
If you would like confirmation of this directly from FOGI you can email them at [email protected]

The trig point is inside a bird breeding area. There are signs along the path asking you to keep out of the area.

With today's bushwalk passing right by this one, I figured I'd have to give it a shot as long as I could do it without disturbing the shearwater nesting grounds. On looking at the Google Maps image (below), I noticed something that looked a little like a 'pathway' to the trig.

Griffiths%2520Island%2520trig.JPG

Sure enough, there was a clear way up through the sand-dune right to the trig point that meant the shearwater nesting grounds would remain undisturbed Dancing. But boy, what a haul up Shocked.

Nevertheless, I made it up to the trig point for some sensational views Very Happy and was followed by muggle Jen who took the required shot for me at 13:20.

And oh I wish I were 30 odd years younger for the trip back down that sand-dune Cool.

Thanks bucketeer.

GrimRaider and I arrived in Port Fairy and thought we would have a go at getting this unusual trig. We walked around the island, enjoying the views and all the information. It is important to stick to the track to get a photo of this trig as the dunes are the nesting places for the birds. TFTC

Whoops it seems I forgot to log this (it's now 29/7/12)! What an awesome spot to bring us. We absolutely loved it. These days, Pa can't go for very long walks as his knee, his back, his hip, and every other bone in his body has been bashed around by greyhounds and a whole life of nonstop work. He's a tough nut to crack though so despite the fact that it was a long walk, he managed. This cache also showed us one awesome spot only known to the locals and even though Pa has lived in Warrnambool for his whole life, he has never been on this island. We arrived on the beach side to see a lone fisherman with a whole bucketload of fish on the rocks. While I ran up to get the photo, Pa had a nice rest while chatting to the fisherman. He had about 20 Whiting (or something along those lines) in his bucket!

An awesome view from the top. Absolutely loved it. I will recommend this cache, a must do!

Thanks for bringing us here Bucketeer, I think the next phase is to hide a GC cache here!

With pleanty of signs telling you where not to go, the picture for this trig is best taken from the track round the island rather than trampling over the Shearwater breeding grounds just to get to the top.

30-Dec-10
Had to run up the dune to get this cache while walking around this great little island.
