Description

Piddington TS 5979

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Piddington.

Serial number is: TS5979.

Last Inspected on: December 12, 1984.

Elevation is: 1093 metres.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I was doing a walk with the family to the nearby lookout. The first views we had seen all weekend after finally the clouds lifted a bit. Parked next to this one and started our walk after a shower had passed

01-Sep-20
Got the bike out today for the first day of spring and thought I would head up Bell's Line of Road and bag a few Trigs. It was a little cold still and there are still some areas around Blackheath and Mt Victoria that are closed due to the fires over the Christmas period but a great day all round. Mt Piddington as my 2nd Trig of the day and I discovered I had been here before and obviously had not taken any notice of the giant trig on top of the shelter here Clapping

31-Aug-20
On our way out to the Coxs River Road, we made sure we grabbed what trigs we could get to. We spotted it from below, but couldn't park to wall up the hill, so kept driving, and ended up driving right to it....

#GA2501 - 08:55; Day two of a caching run to the Blue Mountains with Sol de lune. After making our way through to Katoomba yesterday, the plan for today is to head a bit further west as far as Mount Victoria before heading east again through Medlow Bath, Katoomba (again), Leura, Wentworth Falls, Hazelbrook and Woodford, before heading on to the Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park for some new caches, then hit the road for home. We had now left Katoomba and stopped for this trig on the way to Mount Victoria. TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

A nice place for our picnic lunch today. TFTTP!
Cheers,

An interesting trig, unusual on top of a picnic table... Luckily no one using it today. As per a lot of trig views obscured by trees but able to wander off close by and see the views.

Found this one today when caching instead of walking to Ikara Head. Family sitting at table eating lunch so I didn't attempt climbing like Cookie obviously did. Chose to take a photo with this interesting looking dome thing that reminds me of a trig cairn.

11-Jul-17
My final trig find on my mornings caching expedition. I had driven to this spot with the expectation I was going to walk a trail for many movables - well I walk the trail but my expectation were caput as some one else walked the trail a week back collecting them all.

the walk was good exercise though. some great views along the path

03-Jul-17
Enjoying short bush walk in the mountains with a local mate; visiting from Perth WA.

28-Feb-16
Another trig found back in the 1980s, and having to get back to take some current photos. On my 'way home' from the Event at Bathurst, so stopped, found some caches, and climbed up to get 'close and personal' with the trig. Yep there is still a Name Plate (as at 28/2/16 - but logging the Find @ 29/9/16). BEAUT! Found @ 1530.

02-Jan-16
Found on a weekend trip to the Blue Mountains with Sol de Lune. Ah, I remember coming here a few years ago for a few GC caches. Anyway, it was nice to come back here today to grab a photo - though, the camping muggles did look at us with suspicion. TFTC GCA! Clan Cerberus

Quite the unusual trig being on top of the picnic shelter. Came down here for some moveables and picked up whatever else was around. Had been here years ago BG (before geocaching) but it's a great spot.

Blue Mountains GCA trip with Sol de Lune and Mtrax. We headed off to visit the Gnome Gnation area on Mt Piddington. We had some bad news on the way up that several had been retrieved yesterday, but we persisted and I managed to find 13 moveables, two GA Trads and two Trigs. The area up here is amazing. Dense bush opening out onto huge vistas and quite a bit of clambering to get to some as well. A great day, but now I have to chase a pile more locally. Thanks

A quick grab with Just a Cacher Mr Roo on a visit to the Lithgow area for some caching. Some great views around the area earlier today despite the weather but from here not much of a view.

05-Mar-11
Was just about dark when we got to this one with Just a cacher and Blackbunny. No views as was raining too. Loved how the trig was built on top of the building

Pinic under a Trig... litterally! Great views from up here on a perfect Spring day for caching. Grabbed the regualr cache nearby too!

Visited here while logging 'One Tree Hill' and using the famous high altitude men's room. Great to be able to get so close to a trig. I now wish I'd taken a better close-up photo.
