Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks for this geocache hide for us to find on our long weekend away in Warnambool, checking out the sites, the geocaches and the local TrigPoints.

#GA1973 - 13:40; Day five of a caching mission to Victoria with Sol de lune. The plan for today was to head south through Beaufort to Penshurst, Port Fairy and Warnambool, before heading back via Camperdown and Lismore to Creswick caching all the way. After collecting a a few caches in and around Port Fairy, we had now reached Warnambool for some further caches before heading back for home base. This was our last stop before grabbing some lunch and heading for Camperdown. Parked in the nearby carpark to grab our snaps. TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

As we approached this trig point we saw two magpies perched on the top and keeping a wary eye on us. Thankfully they remained observant but passive during our visit. The required photo, together with the two magpies, has been added to the Gallery. Thanks for the cache.

We were in Warrnambool for the fire brigade state championships and had a few minutes spare between the end of the day's competition and the start of the "debriefing" (of the liquid kind).
Myself and a muggle mate drove out to Point Ritchie to mark off the trig point and a nearby munzee.

We have been here before but enjoyed the return walk up the steps to take the necessary picture.

Found this while up here grabbing the GC cache while the others slept after the Nipper carnival. Am loving the new Garmin Dakota 20 that allows me to load both GC and GCA GPX files, since none of the smartphone apps seem to like the GCA ones. Great view from here. Some clever wag has engraved "Isn't it nice without your TV" on the railing. Normally I'm not fond of the type of scrawl that gets left by 'taggers', but this one was quite witty and even accurate !

Noticed this trig when we were here yesterday grabbing the other cache. Went back and checked and there it was hiding under it on the map. By the time we realised it was too dark for a photo so a quick trip was made up here this morning to grab this one. Thanks.

Wandered up here to find the GC cache, when we realised that this was also a trigpoint. Took a photo and the coordinates, just in case it wasn't already listed in the TP database, but we now see that it's here. Great to get a bonus smiley for our walk up those steps. We loved the view, too... worth two finds! Cheers!

Visited this morning. Wind was blowing and the rain was coming. Have been to this spot once before whilst out running when we stayed in Warrnambool a few years ago.

A great spot with a ripper view. There's even one of those GC caches nearby if you're into that sort of thing. Laughing

We happen to have a GC cache placed here. Photographed Mr O at the trig point on a maintenance visit. Great views!

22-Sep-09
A short stroll up a path, and then enjoyed the views both out to sea and back to the Hopkins River.
