Description
A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.
A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.
The original trigonometrical station ground mark was typical of the times and consisted of a broad arrow cut into a flat stone, which was then buried some two to five feet below ground, with a surface mark often pced for convenience. The original Macedon trigonometrical station was constructed in 1852 and was deemed to have been the point from which all surveys in the district originated. Records confirm that Mont Macedon and other prominent hills in the vicinity of Melbourne were marfked and cleared aund 1853 by a team of British engineers who were experienced in the ordinance survey of Great Britain.
Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.
These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.
To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.
The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.
Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.
If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.
Hot, steamy weather earlier in the day gave way to a spectacular band of torrential downpours late this afternoon. Not usually a drama, but we were expected at the Outlaws' to celebrate a birthday and catch up with a relative we'd not seen in years. So, out we went.
The skies began to clear as we ate dinner, and sang "Happy Birthday", so I decided I wasn't gonna get closer to the mountain any time soon, so out into the last of the rain I drove. Once at the summit, I hustled off down the path to see if I could catch the last of the evening light with the camera on my new phone. It was worth it, I reckon.
So that meant I arrived here at the cairn in the dark, but as the view here's less than stellar, that's not a problem.

It was 2 degrees and snowing here today. Great Trig point here. Info board has its history.
Thanks GCA. Thanks for the Trig
Wet misty and no view for us today....however we did manage to see the trig in the mist, so not all was lost.
An interesting type of trig.....glad we made the detour to see it.
We walked up after lunch and the hiding of a gnome.
Thanks, Robmc.
Wow, this is one of the biggest trig markers I've seen!
Made the short walk up the hill with the large signs pointing the way.
Photo includes Greg, who functions both as a TB and as a our GPSr (well, it's all hooked up inside)
What is the etiquette in logging TP's if the GPS you are using also happens to be your camera?
Cheers Gordo
Great bit of history on the signboard but I would like to have seen those old time surveyors up on top of that pile of rocks taking sitings of the nearby landmarks!
Isn't this a waymark as well?
Anyway, it was a nice day for a drive and a look around.
The locals have been doing a bit of clearing around the trig point.
Look out for debris!
The Riddeller.
Like others we have visited this historic location before but we are also very happy to revisit such a historic feature and again enjoy the area which is relatively familiar after living in Sunbury for 15 years and regularly visiting with friends and relatives.
Our thanks to c@w and the GCA Team for the TP series which we are really enjoying
This is a magnificent stone cairn that marks the spot of the TrigPoint (see photo). Reading the story board nearby gives you so much more information than on the cache page although some has been transcribed there.
This is an easy driveby cache with parking almost directly at the cairn itself.
Of course if you get the time take a stroll further up the mountain to the cross and the views that you get along with some local caches. A great area to come back caching to.
