Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

Official Code: TS5932
Official Name: Cape Byron

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Access: PLEASE remember that there is charges for access parking, so bring your plastic or folding money with you, as it is NOT cheap. *You could walk a kilometre instead (each way)*

On the home leg of our trip we decided to stop in at Byron and visit the most easterly spot on the mainland. We had the trailer on and but thought it can't hurt to go for a drive up the hill before dragging the 1 and 2 year olds up the steep path by the road.

When we got to the top the old two back to back parks were free and with the blessing of the ranger we were able to pay for two spots and park right at the top. How good is that! Good thing we were a bit early as it was much busier when we left.

The kids were excited to see a trig point up here, as they hadn't notices it till up close thanks to the lighthouse.

An old geo-buddy introduced me to Geocaching Australia and particularly Trig Point finds. I really enjoyed searching for these at the time and sharing the experience with a likeminded geocacher and friend. Unfortunately that time no longer exists. I’m a bit sad writing this log. Oh well

We walked the Cap Byron loop today, an awesome collection of caches of all sorts, GC and GA, with of course some trigs - awesome!
What a great trig to bring up a trig milestone... It has even been upgraded at some point to stainless steel vanes, something I've never seen before, with its own explanatory plate for muggles to know what it is.
Bring on #400!

The lighthouse trig certainly overshadowed this one, but it's still a beauty! TFTT

Day 75 Mainland trip
Out and about caching around Byron Bay with Tassie Trekkers and we stopped to photograph the trig which is overshadowed by the impressive lighthouse. It was so busy here in the wind and the rain, that while the car turned around (as no spots to park) we jumped out to take the required photo. TFTT

In Byron to see a gig tonight so decided to see an even better one before it - the sunset begins Wollumbin (or near it). Here nice and early. Got best parking space but paid $8 till sunset for it, which is cheaper than parking in town and sitting at a cafe waiting for the gig to start.

Obligatory photo taken.

Note: Photo didn't load with log through app. Photo lost.

1Minniemoo, Nyssaflutterby, some munchkins and I set off on a roadtrip to Ballina for a weekend.
After dinner we decided to visit the lighthouse, as you do in cyclonic wind.
We strolled around the lighthouse, we had the whole place to ourselves! We actually kind of crab crawled around looking for the trig point, which we located eventually.
Crazy is our middle names!

I'd love to say NyssaFlutterby, wombles and I took a lovely stroll around the lighthouse, but to be perfectly honest, that would be a lie. It wasn't because this isn't a lovely spot. It certainly is. It is just that we complete lunatics decided that we would come here in the midst of Cyclonic winds from Oma battering the coastline. However we still had a blast (not just a blast of wind) going around the lighthouse, sticking close to the walls the entire time - I'm surprised I didn't end up with a free trip to one of the islands courtesy of the winds! As we did the cache together, we have the same photo of the trig point. Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia.

23-Feb-19
On a late night crazy mission with wombles and 1MinnieMoo, we found ourselves at the Byron Lighthouse.
Not sure what we were thinking as it was rather windy!
We did manage to take a photo of the trig point however.

Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia Very Happy

We detoured here on our way home to pick up some caches for the current game TFTC

Grabbed this as part of the 3 GCA caches up here. I like that they painted the lighthouse to match the trig. Very thoughtful.

Nice diversion from the planned route. Always worthwhile for a trig

04-Sep-18
I was in nimbin so I had to drive over to have a look at this light house. I was not walking anywhere else as I had sore ankles so this was as far as i was going
Great view

08-Aug-18
A quick stop for a photo, then off to check out the views. A beautiful day! Thanks for the Trig

When I saw that there was a trig point here, I figured there’d be a listing for it. I wasn’t expecting three icons. Thanks for the cache

#GA2709 - 08:00; Day five of the 2018 Oz GeoMuster mission with Sol de lune. After a night in Ballina, the plan for today was to cache northward through Ballina to Byron Bay and then on to Kingscliff before turning south for home through Bangalow, Evans Head, New Italy, Yamba, Maclean and on to Kempsey for another overnight stay. After an early start, we hadn't gone far up the road when we saw evidence of a heavy shower not too long before we got there, so we seem to have dodged a bullet and got packed up with fairly dry gear. After a couple of stops on the way north, we had reached Byron Bay and found our way up the hill to the lighthouse on the cape and this trig. It would have been nice to stay a while longer and it wasn't until we were making our way down again that we saw the notice about fees for the area we had just quickly visited! Day 5 of the trip up the NSW coast with LuckyL10n after the Morisset event. Today was from Ballina to Kingscliff and back to Kempsey. A few more caches grabbed, with most being trigs...

No problems spotting this one, right next to the lighthouse.....and the required photo was soon in the bag.

Thanks for yet another trig...

What a beautiful day to visit here. Apparently hundreds of other folk thought so too - muggles everywhere. Smile No problems taking a photo though.
A beautiful location.

There were lots of whales offshore today splashing out of the water

14-Jun-16
After a great long weekend hike west of Casino, I had the rare opportunity to have extra days off, so headed a bit further north, than normally able on 'just a weekend'. I had stopped overnight, not far away, so was able to get up to the lighthouse not long after sunrise.
Got some photos for this, and the Waymark, at 0745. Just after some light drizzle.
NICE to see a FULLY intact trig, so frequently visited (well, at least by the public).

25-Mar-16
Came to visit the lighthouse but it was so busy here that we didn't stay, further down the road we stopped and took a distant photo of the lighthouse not realising we had the Trig Point in the photo, and a clear view of it.

16-Jan-16
A quick visit to Byron Bay to find a few caches while on our way home and a bonus trig. Lucky you don't have to be stealthy to find trigs, this was overrun with muggles. The wind was playing havoc with anything remotely loose....hats, glasses, hair, coffee cups, plates of food, even thongs. It was a wonderful blowy day and we enjoyed our visit to the lighthouse and trig.

12-Aug-15
Doing a bit of whale watching and a walk around the head, stopped here to take a pic.

11-Jul-15
What a great place- very popular. A wedding was taking place here today however a bit windy for the brides veil - I was a bit worried we might have a flying bride!

An accidental find while going to Australia's most easterly point.

04-Oct-14

24-Aug-14
Found this one by accident whilst visiting my sister in Ballina and snapped a shot to check on later.

07-Apr-14
On a very windy but sunny day we made our way to the trig. Heaps of people about but that matters nowt when you're doing a trig. Great views out o'er the briny blue.

04-Jan-14
My roadtrip buddy is starting to slowly understand why the hell i'm taking photos of trigpoints!

Now, to run along to the most eastern point!

11-Nov-13
Found on the NSW leg of our Round Aust trip
Staying in Byron Bay for a few days and today we took the kids out for a look at the sights, found some caches and some waymarks and this trig point is also a waymark.

Nice easy one the way we like them, LOL!

A busy place today. Had to wait quite a while to get a parking spot but was prepared to do it as we were going to have enough walking uphill as we were planning on getting the GC cache Easterly Extreme from here as well. Top spot that we had always hoped to visit one day. Thanks.

18-May-13
Dropped by to see the lighthouse and Australia's eastern most point on the mainland. Quite a busy place even in late Autumn.

Have been to this Trig Point on many occasions.

Walking up from the cape, I thought the lighthouse would surely be a passive trig. But there, dwarfed by the tower, is this little concrete pedestal with mast and vanes, all in good condition. According to the nameplate, this should simply be "Cape Byron" trig.

Been to see the lighthouse many times but never got a photo of the trig. Parked down in the town and walked up the track through the rainforest, nice. Lots of muggles taking photos at GZ, I was probably the only one to photograph the trig Wink Weather very nice, clear in all directions.

I have been visiting the lighthouse for many years. Actually, seeing the Cape Byron trig was probably the impetus for my trig hunting. I was last here when nearing the end of the inaugural Ballina to Byron Bay Charity Walk in support of the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter. Cool

At least 3 Caches in 3 Minutes can be done here... #1 Cape Byron Trig. I editted the difficulty to 1 star as you cant get much more obvious then this! Still a steep hill to walk up. The other two are GCA Locationless. You can figure those out Razz Cheers from Sydney

In the spirit of previously visited spots I was here on 17/7/06. I have long had a National Parks annual country pass & the attendant let me park for free, altho reading the conditions afterwards it appears I was lucky.

On a day trip from Ballina, this was one of the stopping places for the bus.

Sadly all the goats that this area was renowned for seem to have disappeared.

This trig is located at the Byron Bay Lighthouse. It offer fantastic Views in all directions. It is also a great place to watch the annual whale migration as they travel up and down the coast.
There is parking available on the site, which costs $7, or you can enjoy the nice walk up from Wategos Beach along the walking track. This track also takes you to the most easterly point on the Australian Mainland.
