Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

A good walk up the hill to a lookout with magnificent views.
Be aware of the mozzies in the area.

27-Oct-23
Nice view from the top

15-Jul-23
While visiting the lookout I noted this here. TFTT

My poor heart didn't like that walk up this hill. Haha. But yet I kept going up after reaching the top. There's no view from the ground. This redundant trig is surrounded by tall trees in every direction. So if you want to look out from the lookout you've got to climb more stairs.

Geo Marker below the Cape Hawke Lookout. Enjoyed my new Garmin Etrex 32x and a morning National parks hike. Smile
Thanks

This one comes with a tower to get a better view of the coast...and now comes with an old trig site.

Looking through some old photographs today and found these from when we stayed at the GREAT LAKES CARAVAN PARK in Tuncurry
Sainted the cache at 2200 hours
TFTC and cheers

Thought this would be an easy drive to find, on our way out of town. Was delighted to be presented with some physical investment to nab this trig. Enjoyed the chest heaving wander to GZ, with the exception of the incessant mozzies. Was slapping several at a time about every 2-3 seconds!
Anyways, it was a great reward from the top looking north and west across the expansive views.
Snapped the trig on the way back down.
Thanks for the cache!
Cheers

Easy to locate the trig point after a long hot steep climb up the mountain.
Nice view only spoilt by the savage mossies. TFTC.

We were exploring the Forster area today, we looped through from north to south grabbing 10 caches and 2 trigs, with 2 DNFs to start the day. We battled scattered showers and gale force winds, but had a good day - the views from the many vantage points along the coast were magnificent.
Another unloved trig - this one is a great one too. It was a good walk to the top after a morning in the car - we nearly got blown off the top of the observation tower by a squall....

07-May-14
It was an enjoyable walk through the rainforest to get to GZ. When we got there, we were surprised to learn that Captian James Cook named the area as Cape Hawke on this first voyage to Australia. The trig point was located quite quickly. The required photo has been added to the Gallery.

A bit of a steep walk but such a great view! We could see were we stayed at Forster and all around the Lakes. Very cool location but it nearly needs another level as the trees are still growing!

20-Apr-14
Awesome place this! There has been a big lookout constructed which gives you a view over the trees 360 degrees from Crowdy Head to Seal Rocks. It is a bit of a steep walk up but a decent track so not too strenuous. We got some great shots from up top, the Trig itself is a bit more tree-locked!

19-Mar-12
Mist, rain & cloud but still found it.

26-Dec-11
15:30, After a nice walk up, passing some scrub turkey's and other birdlife on the way, we arrived at GZ.

Great views from the top, highly recommended Very Happy

Totally worth the upwards climb. What a great view but the mozzies on the way up were some gigantic mutant things, take some bug repellent and apply it liberally before starting the climb. This is worth the find just for the view from the top of the tower, wonderful. There is a stone memorial and plaque to mark the position from which James Cook named the site and it looks like it may have been a trig position at some stage but a newer one has replaced it.

27-Jun-10
We were there today on a perfectly clear day - could see for kms and kms!

11-Oct-09
1700 A fast walk up. and a quicker run back down before the rain set in. Had been here a couple of times before, for the other geocaches here. The views have been grown out tho'. Shame!
