Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself. This one has a base made out of local stone.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to. This one is on a slight rise and has a view of thick bush.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

This Trig may have a now archived cache in its top, the cache was archived after the area near the cache was burnt out.

We were headed home after a 4 day drive around southern NSW chasing LGAs, grabbed what trigs we could get to.
The fabled 'Stone Trig', with the T5 cache for a quick step up a foot or so! Smile It is a nicely preserved old trig, for sure.

One of the best old trigs I have had the pleasure of finding.

Got up at sparrows to go find this trig before the rest of the crew surfaces in Dubbo for our day at the zoo. This was an outstanding idea, particularly at sunrise, although I did have all sorts of trouble on the road driving in where the sun broke the horizon and caused basically 0 visibility at times! The trig is an absolute classic and is located in a very interesting section of bush which, being the first half of October, is littered with Greenhoods (Sandhill Greenhood) and Caladenia carneas. A massive bonus! Thanks for the great start to the day!

Awesome trig out in the Goonoo Forest

Found it!
Went on a fun bush-bashing treasure hunt today prompted by a message from Mix this week. Took gangstella, hubby and my camera with me.
We were not disappointed! Found the trig, and a little something else!!! Wink
Left a travelling/bingo geocache behind.

I was passing by this trig point on the Mogriguy Forest Road this morning.
So I kept an eye out to starboard for any sign of a track that would lead me to this high point Very Happy
Hmmm !! No track Think
Methinks a walk through the scratchy scrub might be in order Smile
So clad in shorts and T-shirt off I went.
From abeam the trig point is not the best way to get there as I found out on the stroll back to the geomobile via the much less scratchy scrub Laughing
But what a great trig point !!
No roads or tracks lead to it so it has been 'lost in the bush' Very Happy
Thus it has survived in tact with only a few old bits of scribble upon it Clapping
But I see that Mix beat me to the FTF by about nine years !!
Hey !! I'll happily claim the STF (but will secretly covet being the FTF after publication) Razz

I first found this trig in 2004, I was in the area doing another cache and noticed this trig on the Topo map and thought I'd try and find it, the bush was very thick and I only had an approximated co-ordinate from the map to go on but I parked Mendooran Rd down hill from the trig andc started trying to make my way up. After a while I was sure I must close but could still not see it, I was looking for the standard white plinth. Then when I was nearly on top of it I saw it. I logged it then on the 'Two Dogs' locationless cache "that's the trig" and returned a few days later to hide a cache with Bronze. I eventually archived the cache after nearby fires although I had moved away from Dubbo by this stage so did not physically visit to check the cache itself. I recommend this trig because its different to most others and because I have good memories of exploring the area not knowing if it was even really there and then being surprised by what I found.
