Description

Another in the GCA trig point series.

This trig point is at the top of Rosny Hill, and is basically a drive-by.  It is affectionately known by the Department of Primary Industries and Water Information and Land Services Division as ST 77!  A large parking area offers wonderful views of the City of Hobart, Mount Wellington, the Tasman Bridge, and the glorious Derwent River. Although these views are also spectacular at night, other nocturnal users of the area may make venturing out to the trig point a less attractive option than a daytime approach.

You should also be on the lookout for Sabre-Toothed Wombats, who also frequent the area! See No More Mr. Nice Guy (GC13E9P) for more information!

Other Caches in the area include: View 360 (GCN3HB), Illawarra's Folly (GCJGY1), and most of SG-3's caches.  In case you don't know, SG-3 is a multi-award winning cache hider.  If you go for any of his caches you can expect quality.  QUALITY, I say! (SG-3 says: "OI! I didn't write that!  Someone has viciously vandalized my original, self- deprecating description! ")

Standard GCA information for trigpoint caches follows:

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies. This particular trigpoint was discovered independently and entered manually.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

We were in Hobart yesterday sorting out some stuff for our wedding in February and came over to the eastern shore to the shopping center to get a few things. We thought we would come up the hill here to check out the view. While here noticed a trig tower so grabbed the obligatory photo and then headed back north for home. TFTTP Clan Cerberus

Nice day in Hobart

10-Jan-19
First Trig for the year, found in the failing light, after dinner out nearby with AlbyDangles (who'd already found this) and a born again muggle. Nearly too dark for a pic, but I'm not that photogenic anyway.
Cheers.

10-Nov-18

A nice little GCA pocket here on Rosny Hill has given me 3 finds today.

17-Jan-18
Looks like Ziggiau is doing a similar cache run as me as I am finding their geocaching name in the logs in the caches. I’m sure they would have got this trig as well as it was an easy find up here at the lookout. TFTC

22-Nov-17
Great night to take the GeoGSP for a walk. Great views with the added bonus of being able to hear the outdoor Cold Chisel concert over at wrest Point.

03-Oct-17
Easy one to locate

08-Feb-17
Last find before heading to the airport. A nice quickie at 13:35 and I was on my way.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

13-Apr-16
Tech alert! Something has gone seriously wrong with the Tardis photographic device! Not even a liberal use of the sonic screwdriver could correct the rather artistic effect applied to what was snapped at GZ. So trying to land the Tardis whilst snapping the snap has suffused the area with a definite pinkish tinge. Plus my old fingers must be shaking terribly. But I was there! Honest I was...

01-Oct-15
Top spot

I grabbed this trig while I was looking for anew GC cache up here.

The view from up here is great.

20-Jun-14
A nice winter's afternoon found me up here looking for a few caches in the area. This one was actually in sight of another so I decided to try taking my first ever selfie using my Oregon 550 camera. Unless you are with another person own a smart phone which I don't or take a camera and tripod I can't see how you can take a photo of a trig point and include both yourself and your gps so 2 out of 3 counts as far as I'm concerned. Now I can't see how to attach my photo to this log ughhh!

09-May-14
Had lunch up on the hill today after a lengthy cache nearly. Couldnt miss this trig point as it was so close. TFTC

12-Sep-13
Had half an hour to spare before starting work, so thought I'd grab a couple caches on Rosny Hill....my photo doesnt include a pic of GPS device, as that is my camera/iPhone, so includes a selfie! Wink

31-Aug-13
ST77 added to trig point name

28-Jun-13
Collected this whilst finding others in the area. TFTC SG-3

Our ambition was greater than what we could achieve on this walk. This was partly brought about by the fact that the multicache took us on a circuit of Rosny Hill that we had already just walked. Those we didn't get can wait for another day.

08-May-13
While doing the Rosny walk with all the caches were new I went to Rosny to look at this Trig Point and took a Photo as proof of visit

28-Jan-13
Took hubby up to Rosny lookout to have a look, I quickly found and photographed this while we were there. (Will add the photo as soon as I work out how). We were here a while, as we had to watch a big boat go under the bridge.

31-Dec-12
Found this one while attending the New Year's Eve event on the hill. A quick stroll through the dry grass and the pic was taken just as dusk was falling. Muggles and cachers aplenty up here, but the trig was deserted; all eyes facing cityward, watching out for the fireworks. Fairly cold and windy but a great view of the city lights!

12-Aug-12
It was late in the day when we visited this trig point this afternoon, but not so late that there was any nocturnal activity to cause us concern! It's currently pretty scrubby and weedy around the trig point. If you look carefully at the photo you will see a man in a black jacket holding a frog and gps - and just in case they are too well camouflaged, there is a close up of the frog and gps!

02-Jul-12
Took the 3 Geokids to the nearby GC cache, and spotted this enroute. We admired the lovely view and got the obligatory shot. TFTT

17-Jun-12
A quick late evening stop & photo for our nearest trig point to home. The views from here of Hobart city & the Tasman Bridge are excellent, we live lower on the front of the hill but the views are even better up here. Only other vehicle in the car park bugged out when we brought the red puddle-jumper in to land nice & close to the trig point. Thanks for bring us up here to enjoy our view even more. Smile

09-Jun-12
A quick, easy trig in a beautiful area. Fine and sunny and great views all round. TFTC Very Happy

02-Dec-11
Grabbed a photo of this one while the watching the ship flotilla reenacting Mawson trip to Antarctica 100 years ago

23-Oct-11
Ok this is the easy part, having visited the caches up here back in Noov 08 we returned today to do the trig, Stand by while I learn how to load a GCA photo up. Had forgotten how good the views where from up here so was glad to return. Hanging under the trip was a forgotten orienteering flag.
JABs.

09-Oct-11
This is one of the best views of Hobart that I have seen/been to. Well worth a visit with a town map and a compass and a sunny day. The dark cloud on the eastern side took about 5 minutes before it covered the carpark with lots of rain. A great spot to visit.

06-Oct-11
Last find for us on our Tasmanian trip - on the way back to Hobart from Richmond I drove up to the lookout and quickly found this trig with the geoboy while the muggle family members stayed in the car. Not much view today with the cloud and rain but you can see how impressive it would be on a clear day.

18-Sep-11
Stumbled upon this trig at night time while looking for a cache. Did our best in a team effort to photograph it!

18-Sep-11
Found whilst looking for "view 360" in the dark so had to try for a good photo. Smile

17-Sep-11
Nice clear day. I have been here many times before, such a good lookout.

21-Aug-11
Easy find because we already knew where it was. Found a cache near here a couple of months ago.

29-Apr-11
Great views on a clear day

03-Apr-11
Another Trig found

02-Apr-11
Had no caches planned in hobart and seen a few up the top of Rosny Hill so went up and had a look around. TFTC

31-Mar-11
Great view from up here.

29-Mar-11
Found while travelling from Triabunna to Hobart on the last full day of our holiday in Tasmania. What fabulous views from up here. Located the trig and the survey maker. Photos to follow.

01-Jan-11
Easy find.... nice views.

30-Dec-10
While out chasing gnomes we finally had all the necessary tools needed to log a find on this one. A viewpoint we visit often, just to while away some spare time while waiting for people to finish school, work etc. Cheers Quilter

06-Dec-10
A lovely day for a view across the Derwent to Mt Wellington.

14-Nov-10
Quite easy access compared to recent trig points. Rather cold and blustery here today but still great views.

31-Jul-10
This one was an added bonus as we looked in the fading light for the nearby cache.Hence the poor quality of the photo. Whistle

27-Jun-10
Almost a drive by Trig Point

TFTC

Got a reasonable picture of the sunset on my Iphone

08-Jun-10
Came up here for lunch and to look at the magnificent views. We decided to grab the TP while we were up here.

31-May-10
Went here about a month ago with 2 muggles - My sister and one of my best friend's (my running mentor). Was an easy one to find but a very nice view!

31-May-10
The easiest trig I have ever done.

05-Apr-10
Our very first trigpoint cache and probably the easiest one in Tasmania.
Our camera's busted so we had to use Sogs phone to take the required piccie. Sorry about Paulus' hair.

30-Mar-10
Ducked up here after grabbing a coffee, and enjoyed the gorgeous sunshine and stunning views before heading back to dealing with classes of teenagers again. My the grass is long and dry!!!! I enjoyed this little relaxed moment in the day - wondering why I've never done it before and that I should escape for a few minutes more often!!! Thanks SG3 and GCA.

21-Jan-10
Found almost by accident on the way to an nearby cache.
A lovely day, but my the grass is long!

12-Nov-09
A quick stop and yet another visit to this place - although the views are always worth it! Thanks SG-3 and GCA !

08-Nov-09
Happened to walk right past this one on our way to another nearby cache...

07-Nov-09
This was a great activity for a beautiful Saturday Afternoon!

07-Nov-09
OK, I'm thinking it is OK for me to log this one! Took two of the Marines on a walk to enjoy a glorious day on the Eastern Shore. You can't beat those views of the mountain and the river!

As we were leaving, a young lad wandered towards the trig with an Etrex Yellow in his hand... maybe a new cacher in the works?

Thanks to the team at GCA for this addition to the world of Geocaching in Oz!

01-Nov-09
Not sure if I'll get right into this trig thing, but I'll take any excuse to check out the view on top of Rosny Hill, especially when the alternative is food shopping.
Hilltop was devoid of any activity on a late Saturday arvo. Thanks Mr SG3

17-Oct-09
Nice easy find - a very easy trig to get to!

17-Oct-09
A very easy find lol. The trig point is still in place

11-Oct-09
Found with Lottie. I always love the views here; wading through the detritus left behind by muggles I don't love quite so much!

06-Oct-09
An easy trig to get to. I think this will probably be the most found trig in southern Tas.

27-Sep-09
Found at 1618hrs as my only find of the day. It was teaming down and had to hurry the photos. Only got the trigpoint and a snap of me and the GPS. Too wet to muck around trying to get the tripoint and me in one photo. TFTC OldSaint.

23-Sep-09
Last find before leaving Tassie. Dashed up here to find it was quite misty and so the photo is completely unconvincing (insofar as making it obvious that it really is Rosny Hill is concerned). There was a flock of mountain parrots growling to themselves in the tree by the trig point.

I think Gorbak may have beaten me (I was early afternoon).

23-Sep-09
Found at 18:40. Thanks

23-Sep-09
Thanks SG-3 for filling this much needed gap. (-:

A quick find after dropping off the young 'uns at school.
