Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

We were up here in January 2017, on a bus tour from a cruise ship. Of note was we bailed the bus in the middle of town to grab a webcam, virtual (old style) and a handful of ECs then grabbed a $70-odd taxi back to the ship.... at that time our GPS didn't handle GA caches well, so unless we physically checked the GPS we would miss stuff all the time. That is now rectified with some GPX editing, and we were back today, for a 1/3.5 GC cache down the hill actually. We weren't going to miss a trig so close... Smile

Another "two for the price of one" find. Came up to Mt Lofty for the view, which we didn't get because it was cloudy and misty, but I was pleased that (a) I was able to get a nice coffee in the Summit Cafe and (b) there was a GC earthcache and a GCA trig virtual here for me to get. So, who cares about the view! Very Happy

04-Jun-18
I had no gold coins for parking ($4), and besides, I only planned to be here for a few minutes to photograph this. So I took this photograph from the car and left. TFTC.

17-Jul-16
It's been a while since we've been to the Mount Lofty Summit lookout, and got a surprise to discover that we needed to pay $4 just to park and grab a single photo!

We ignored the parking ticket machine, and made our way through throngs of people clad in "active wear" to get a close up pic of our GPSr next to the the monument/trig.

We were going to have a crack at the Earthcache up here, but decided to leave just in case we did actually get a parking fine.

When we got to Mount Lofty today there was very low cloud, rain and visibility was poor. However, that didn't prevent us geeting the required photo for this very impressive trig point marker. TFTC

15-Jan-13
2245 Had slightly different coordinates for the Trig Tower than the loaded on the GPSr, but there was NO WAY I was going to get on top and try to average it!!!

02-Dec-12
AFter a relaxing weekend in Hahndorf, we detoured to Mt Lofty on our way back to Adelaide. Great views from up here - we stopped for a milkshake and pot of tea. I wasn't sure whether this would be a TP, but took a photo anyway, expecting that it may. Checking online when I got home I saw that I could claim a find. Photo attached!
