Description

Steeles Hill 1973 - Gruyere PM 30

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Using the web-based "Survey Marks Enquiry Service (SMES)", the Mark and Alternative names have being acquired.

Due to temporary road closure at the "Wandin Yallock Creek Bridge" which is on "Killara Rd" but closer to "Seville East" , it's best to approach from "Coldstream" instead.

Park entrance is located at the end of "Yarraloch Way" which branches off "Killara Rd".
Parking space is limited.

Take note of closed days as displayed in the sign.

Investigated the trig point while visiting the nearby GC.COM trad. cache. Very late log, but it was a memorable late-afternoon, mid-winter walk. The light was getting dim while taking photos. I didn't get back to my car until night had well and truly fallen.

28-May-14
While out here to get the nearby GC cache I grabbed a photo or two of this trig. Loved it.

16-Jun-13
All maps refer to this trig as Steel Hill so I have amended the listing.
Briarty hill is the one with the tower on it.
The trig was visited today by us during a bushwalk.

This was a bonus for me after finding a couple of "unloved" gc caches in a beautiful walk. This is a great vantage point as so many trig points are, of course.

28-May-11
While browsing Google Earth (with geocaches shown) discovered Warramate Hills Reserve - I'd never heard of it before; but it looked promising for a day walk sometime. Well that time came today. Very pleased to have made the effort to walk up here - great views even with the cloudy sky (might have to come back on a clear sunny day). Arrived at the Trig at 13:30 - perfect timing and place for lunch.

11-Jan-10
Was checking a map and found that this Trig point is on Briarty Hill and not Steele's hill as it was previously named trig Point.

30-Nov-09
Found at 1120 hours, after completing Tower of Cirith Ungol (LR11)(GCJYAQ).
I walked down from GC cache the up to this one.
The views from trig point are fantastic although i forgot to take a picture of them.
I did take pictures of the trig point.
Enjoyed the walk in,as the views on the way up are just as fantastic.

Came here today to log this, but the DSE & Parks decided to do some control burning.

A great walk in to gz, the trig point has some brilliant views and a great walk (albeit a bit steep at times but worth the walk). To log this one you should follow the notes for the near-by cache and then continue up the track. Well worth the visit!
