Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

After a slog to the top we spotted the blue poles, any survey benchmark is buried down there....

09-Nov-19
New stairway now leads to the top of Prospect Hill. Many, many steps. Once at the top you should not climb the barrier to gain access to this trig point, however there is a notice nearby reading "Warning, a survey mark is located...." however I cannot read the rest of the sign. This blue pole is becoming inundated by sand, I believe that this is where the trig is.

made it to the top before the backpackers

06-Oct-14
Climbed to the top but couldn't find anything resembling a trig point or marker. The given co-ords are no where near the top of the hill which doesn't make sense.
A good view and worth the walk up but this one needs some clarification.

Climbed a million or so steps and enjoyed the view. The coords indicated well down the hill so couldn't be too accurate. Took a pic of the talk pole but I don't think that's it. We did find a pipe in the ground in a likelier spot. Will add photos when back home.

Updated the coordinates from the SA land management website and found a steel pipe marker at my indicated GZ but a fair bit of digging is probably required to reveal the brass disc.

Prospect Hill Trig Point on the 'peak' of Mt Thisby appears to be in a state of disrepair - there is at least a 4-5 metre metal pole with bolts that once would have held the circular marker, located about 10 metres south of the lookout. (I suspect this is the remains of the trig marker - see attached image). This is a great vantage point to view the narrowest portion of the island overlooking the very scenic Pennington Bay. Thanks J_&_J.

AKA Mount Thisby. Beacon is long gone and the survey mark is probably under the boardwalk. Well worth the trek for great views of KI. Very Happy

16-Jul-10
Climbed to the top of Prospect Hill to find this cache, unfortunately no trig point at the top:( but still worth the 423 steps to the top as it provides some fantastic views of the area, easy to see why Matthew Flinders did the same
