Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

Acess to this TrigPoint is easiest via Swan's Road at co-ords: S37 38.422, E144 24.464.

If the gate is open, an easily accessible slightly rough track will take you there. My 2WD did it easily. If the gate is locked the walk is about 350m up to an elevation of around 350m at the trigpoint itself.

From this location you get almost uninerrupted views of the You Yangs and the Melbourne CDB and the view alone is worth the effort to get to this cache.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I was up here for work today, they are putting in facilities and tracks for fitness all around the hill.

Came up via the new housing development on the town side of the hill. Not too hard a walk up, even for me...but it looked as though I could have got closer with the car from another angle.

Well, the end of another lockdown so it was good to be able to get out again. Come to town to catch up with a mate and I was too close not to grab this one. Have been up here a few times but unable to locate photos so I made an excuse to revisit again today. Dancing

Thanks so much for highlighting this TP Geocaching Australia. Appreciate your efforts Clapping

An easy true drive-by (I rolled down the car window, pointed the camera and clicked). The coordinates given above made the access easy, and there is no gate now. TFTC.

GCA Find #55

Great views up here. Nice Trig. Wink

As we had a little extra time this afternoon we decided to make our way to this trig point and the nearby GC caches. On arrival at the start of the road up we found that the gate mentioned has disappeared so access is not a problem.

The section of the road at the entrance was very sloppy and rutted so we decided to leave our two wheel drive street car at the entrance and make the short walk to the top.

As we started our walk the sun came out and we enjoyed the warmth on our backs as we climbed the gentle slope.

It is always disappointing to see that some people have used areas like this to dump household rubbish.

As we neared the hill top we spotted the trig marker which is dwarfed by the hugh communications towers near by. After taking the required photos we checked out the 360 degree views that can be seen from this point. Well worth the walk for the views alone.

In hind sight we would have been able to drive all the way to the top in our 2wd as the road was quite solid after the entrance area.

Debated driving up to this one but with the heavy rain last night we decided to walk, don't want another quarantine sticker on the car when we get to Station Pier. Not a difficult walk but a chilly wind kept us moving! TFTT

In Bacchus Marsh to get an Earthcache ("Triassic Park") for International Earthcache Day, I then discovered my regular pocket queries didn't extend this far west... However, GCA saved the day and I have a number of targets to go for, starting with this one. It's been a while since I've done a Trig Point and as the track looked like a quagmire I took the two-leg-drive up (as it happened, the only mud was left in the deep puddles, the rest was deceptive and completely sun-baked... Oh well!) pausing along the way to take some photos of Patterson's Curse, and a variegated thistle, and attempt to get some of some Skylarks. Eventually the trigpoint was reached, something of an "anticlimax" these days as it is dwarfed and cramped for space by the communications pylons and huts all around it. I uncovered the survey mark and after scratching away the layer of debris under the lid took a couple of photos of it (only to later discover them spoiled by shadows from the trig legs that weren't noticed at the time...) The view was great today, the You Yangs rising in the distance with gliders and their tow-planes white specks in the almost cloudless sky - I'm glad I took the trouble to come and visit here. Smile

Found this one at 10:35 while on the way to this month's bushwalk at Lerderderg Gorge. The pickie makes it look rather bleak but it was, in fact, a very pleasant day Very Happy. Thankfully the gate was open so it was nice easy drive to the top in the Geocamira Smile.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

Found this one quite a while ago when I was doing another one from Geocaching.com, just didn't know how to attach a photo. I am trying againthis time. Live quite close by and am up here quite often on training walks so I have seen a variety of views in different weather conditions.

Did this trig point at the same time as the nearby cache. Walked up the hill as the Motor Home might not have made it Crying or Very sad Nice views and an abundant growth of weeds due to recent rains.

Grabbed this trig while picking up the nearby cache, easy drive to the top today but a very cold wind.

MW could do with a truck load of gravel for the track to the top. Very sloppy and didn't make it to the top with the 4WD. Had to walk the last 100m. Super view.

After leaving the nearby event at Merrimu Reservoir, I was doing some caching further west and the lure of two caches at the one spot was too much to resist - especially as I was able to make them into a drive-by after coming up the nicely muddy track from the open gate below. I would have liked it if the weather had been a bit more friendly while I was there, but it didn't stop me from taking in the expansive views and, after logging the GC cache, I whipped out the camera to get this one too.

Thanks GCA and caughtatwork

After finding the nearby GC cache today I couldn't miss the opportunity to catch this TP. It seems that it wasn't in the database so I captured the co-ords and took the pictures and when I got home it went in straight away.
I think I'll claim FTF on this cache.
You get some great views from up here and it's more that worth the visit as I drove up from the entry point which makes this an easy driveby 1/1 cache.
Thanks (to me) for the opportunity to find a GCA TrigPoint cache.
This gets me ever so much closer to Keeper of Time in the Victorian GCA leaderboard.
