Description

This TrigPoint in situated in Moyarra. This is only a Survey Marker.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

We stopped to look for this trig marker today as we headed to San Remo. It was blowing a gale and raining on and off.

When we arrived at the marker we found tbe post but the grass was very long and wet. We dug around hoping to expose the brass button but were defeated by the weather.

We did not go up to the lookout for fear of being blown off the hill. We have added our photo to the gallery.

#GA2159 - 08:45; Day two of a caching run through eastern Victoria with Sol de lune to build on our July trip further to the west. After a night in Traralgon, today sees us head through the Latrobe Valley, Baw Baw, South Gippsland and on to the Bass Coast before heading north through Cardinia, Yarra Ranges into Murrundindi and an overnight in Alexandra. After a long slow drive south from Ellinbank, we reached this trig only to find yet another lot of roadworks. We drove past then doubled back and managed a park across the road. A look at earlier photos helped, but it wasn't until I trod on something which felt unusual tah a bit of digging revealed the marker. Snaps were shot and then we shot through too! Road works in the area made this one a little difficult, however we did a bit of manoeuvring back and forth and managed to park across the road. A quick check of other photos, and then a bit of a dig through the long lush grass, and the trig point was uncovered. Photos were quickly snapped and then it was back across the road, into the car and we were gone.

The survey marker is located 20 poles before the viewing platform (Count 20 poles back/down from the viewing platform)
Another helper is that the pole which is at GZ has an additional shorter cut pole (which none of the other poles have), refer to photos.
Had to scrape overgrown grass from the top of the marker as it was not obvious at first.

Toposcope located below viewing platform
Amazing views with an incredible sunset reward.

I thought "Permanent Survey Marks" were not allowed to be logged as "Trigs"

Found on the way to the nearby GC cache. Not the traditional trig with the disc on legs but have found others like this that are listed as trigs. TFTT

Well we looked and looked and could not find this. Saw the log that a previous finder had mentioned but it was not a survey marker. Also Na'wal found it on 29th June 2015 and posted a photo on waymarking.com so I am assuming that it is still there. We were so unsure as to what we were looking for that we thought the nearby direction marker was it until I found that listed on a locationless cache and understood the difference. So a DNF for us but the views are worth going back for another look.

To log or not to log, that is the question. Wink I mosied on up here for a look for this one but no matter how much scrounging around I did, there was no survey marker to be seen and certainly nothing resembling hi pressure's photo. Given that the black disc is long gone, I reckon that the survey marker has followed it. Crying or Very sad In fact, I suspect that a short wooden pole is now placed where the marker was (or maybe still is).

For that reason, I'm claiming the find (at 16:40) but will put a watch on it and if the marker is found again at the given coordinates, I'll change it to a DNF.

The views at GZ are pretty darn good. Very Happy

Thanks hi pressure.

GMelb had a quick look for this one when doing the nearby GC cache, but didnt find it... however as we have never done one of these before, he didnt know what he was looking for lol!!
So it's probably there, but if it was on the ground it would be covered by long grass! It was too cold and windy to look for long so he escaped to the warmth of the car.
