Description

Very central to Canberra, this trig offers fine views over Canberra! There is also a survey mark nearby.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

After a great Retreat, in Murrumbateman, over the weekend and still with some free time on my hands, I decided on heading into Canberra for the next couple of days after it. Monday 23/11, main focus was the older caches around the ACT which sort of panned out but with extra caches that I couldn’t pass by changed that. It was a great day visiting various places that I hadn’t and many others that I have. I also avenged my DNF on GC8PRBB and I found out that I am the first person to find this cache since August. Big Grin The only problem was that there was rain to begin the day but it cleared up pretty quickly. With Geocaching, a small spot of shopping and meal breaks it lead into a great day out. Tuesday 24/11, didn’t really have a mission and I only ended up with 4 finds. This was made with up 2 WP’s of a LC, a MC and a TP. After all this plus lunch, it was time to head home. TB visit on all caches. I would like to thank all the CO’s of the caches I found and for allowing them to bring me and others enjoyment. Big Grin TFTC’s and TFTTP’s Big Grin

Sophoutloud and I are exploring Canberra, I think it is quite a beautiful and unique city (not sure why it cops so much flack) we made the trip up Mt Ainslie for sunset and to take some photos of the city too. Not much left of this one but glad it was still here

02-Oct-20
We have mad it to Canberra!!! And what a convenient city to find trigs in Theres almost a road up every mt. We were up here specifically at sunset and would recommend that time of day if you had a choice what a great view of the city!!

It really helps to transpose coordinates correctly - this was the second mistake today. Grrrr!!!! Thanks for the trig though - I actually managed to photograph the pin so there was no confusion about where the trig actually is.

This afternoon I had a wonderful time targeting Trig caches around the area. I have actually photographed 9 trigs but will only log 8 as I am hoping to claim the 8th one when I get around to walking up closer to it. Thanks Geocaching Australia for publishing all these trigs to challenge us to get away from the locationless that are so numerous at the moment. Apologies for the generic logs. My husband and I drove up here to get a good view of the layout of Canberra. We have been staying in Queanbeyan for the Clear Waters Mega and every time we drive into Canberra we get our directions confused. Hopefully now we will keep ourselves straight.
I always like to hunt out these Trig cache.

This (ex)trig is almost a must do location. The panorama is totally impressive. Obviously, surveyors use this point given the number of surveying points close to the location of the trig. We found the trig location on a gorgeous Autumn day and were wowed by the view.

We found this one after a visit to the War Memorial

09-Nov-17
Late in the day we visited Mount Ainslie and located the Trig Point marker. Two photos were have been added to the Gallery: Mrs y'stassie standing next to the survey marker; and a closer look at the survey instrument mounting spigot on top of the survey marker. The views from this location are superb, especially at this time of the day as the sun was getting low on the horizon. Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.

29-Oct-17
Nice but breezy up here today.

21-May-17
A scary moment as we drove to this one with the sun completely blinding us as we came around one corner. After parking the van Mr Beetle wandered off to check out the views while I walked up to the trig. Bit difficult to take a selfie with the trig and the GPS on a tablet so took 2 photos. One of me with the trig in the background and one of the GPS at the base of the marker.
So impressed with this place that we came back up here to check out the sunset which was spectacular.
Love the way the main part of the lookout here lines up the war memorial and the 2 parliament houses perfectly.
Thanks, a top spot to visit.

04-May-17
I have visited this one many times. Finally, got my camera to work. Very Happy

Grabbed a quick photo of this trig in the dying light after heading out for a puzzle cache nearby.

22-Feb-17
Having climbed to the top of this peak many times I thought it might be time to claim it as a find.

30-Oct-16
Collecting clues for the Tourist Tour cache, we were in the right place to also collect this trig point.

F(H)ound It! 11:40am

Drove up here chasing a multi-cache. Feels like cheating to do a TRIG as a drive-by, but I have climbed this hill on foot twice in the last few days and I'm sure I'll be doing it again soon!

Catching up on some old trig's I have visited.

I visited this trig on the 14/8/16 whilst finding "Pole Position IV" (GC6AT6Y)
This cache very close to the trig.

I have also visited this trig DOZENS of times since!

Looking for caches and found there was a TP nearby too and an amazing view over the capital. Fantastic view in darkness, such a big city.

easy summit today, was pressed for time so just grabbed a few photos of the trig point.

21-Nov-15
Started our day up here (weather was great which gives good views) but did most of our time in the War Memorial.

Ribbit Out and about on Mt Ainslie today and this was another stop along the way. Saw the survey mark nearby and continued on to the posted coords[?] TFTT Ribbit

03-Nov-15
It's all about the Trig, and Paris Bear.
There are several Survey Marks up here, but this looked the most important. Gorgeous sunny Sunday morning in October 2015, fabulous views.
Thanx GA for including Trigs as loggables.

16-Aug-15
Interesting. What I thought was the trig, isn't the trig. The real trig is much less flamboyant. SurprisedVery Happy

23-Jun-15
Found the Trig last night 7:10pm with my geoson. As he is visiting Canberra during school holidays I am dragging him around, I think he still does like the little explore. Trig is not quite the same structure or type as many others presumably to minimise damage. I like the view from up here in many ways better than Black Mountain (at no cost) even if this is lower. From here we will try to find a GC cache. Flagged as outstanding for the views from the location.

07-May-15
claimed this find on the way back to the car

01-Feb-15
I was up and down the mountain today testing the new geomobile and collecting information for the Earthcache here. At the same time, I gathered some information for a Multi nearby. I decided to grab this one while I was up here as I remember seeing it on the map but not claiming it yet. I wandered to GZ and as others before me I wasn't sure if it was the grey pole at listed coordinates so I took a photo at both locations.

Thanks for the listing Geocaching Australia

With a bit of time before today's first appointment thanks to an early arrival, we came up here for the views and this trig point. Very Happy I was a bit confused as to whether the pole at GZ or the nearby survey marker at S35° 16.191 E149° 09.519 was the trig point so I took a pickie of both JIC.

Some great views across to Parliament House on such a glorious morning. Very Happy

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

07-Jul-14
Walked up Mt Majura and Mt Ainslie today with the Canberra Bushwalking Club. Managed to bag this trig just before lunch. Geocaching brought me here - fantastic! Thanks for the cache Smile

06-May-14
Our final stop of the day in Canberra was a view of Mt Ainslie at night. It was a very chilly night but there were a few people up here. We were surprised to see numerous wallabies up here feeding on the grass just off the road. We also noticed a couple of cachers who climbed here to do the nearby multi-cache. As we went up to see what they were looking for we were greeted with this trigpoint. TFTTp GCA

18-Feb-14
I found myself here starting a multi, so grabbed a selfie.

31-Dec-13
Walked to the top today as part of port Canberra visit. Found the survey market near the aviation beacon. It has a plaque marked Mt Ainslie ago I reckon it's the trig. Walked to the weird post with the padlock and took a shot of that. Will attach when back home.

14-Dec-13
#GA77 - 17:30; Out and about with Rapidlywild this afternoon on the trail of 10 different cache types. While we had to rely on three GCA caches to reach double digits, including this one, it was the OZ Mega BBQ that made the whole adventure possible. Made my way solo to GZ for this one, my seventh variety for the day, as RW had to collect others for the event. Odd trig this one! TFTC GA Very Happy

16-Oct-13
It certainly is a weird trig here. Nice! Found while doing a cache that was archived sometime ago (I think), Pole Position again.

23-Sep-13
Seems to be some confusion about what is the actual trig point here, but I took a photo next to the cylindrical object that most people assume to be it.

30-Jun-13
Nice spot to visit. My wife has never been here before so while she enjoyed the views I went for the TP.

Just for the record my GPSr and camera are one in the same.

Cheers,

24-Mar-13
Visited Mt Ainslie on a very clear morning and take the attached photo.

29-Sep-12
We were visiting Canberra on the long weekend, and as is our style headed up for a view. I checked for local caches of any variety, and noticed this trig. I wasn't sure whether the trig was the small pole or the large tower, so took pictures of both. I was using the iPhone as both the GPS and camera, so wasn't able to get the "GPS" into the photo. TFTT!

06-Jul-12
Up here quite often, but usually forget to log this, or don't have the GPS etc. My shadow is in the photo, just not me. GPS (the most important thing) is though.

Passed by after doing some puzzles lower down.

12-Jun-12
Odd kind of trig here, looks more like a pole.

22-Mar-12
While we were up here for some caches and movables we also had a closer look at the trig very unimpressive indeed.

12-Mar-12
Found with all members of the MajuraHathi Parti including Echo the geopup, the 5th member (so named!). A couple of spots for this location, enjoyed them all.

11-Mar-12
Great views - after the coffee that Doppelfrog had (thankfully) brought along I even enjoyed them.

My GA Cacher app seemed to think the locked pole was the trig, although doesn't look like a traditional trig to me. Anyway the highest natural point so might as well be. Views good as always from here.

21-Nov-11
1st of 3 this afternoon on Mt Ainslie, in a temperature we might not get in a long while again! A nice view with an easy trig. TFTC. Clapping

18-Sep-11
Clapping my very first cache, my daughter and i enjoyed the views

18-Aug-11
Came up to this lookout to see the sights of Canberra.. Found the Trig point (as per photo) but was a little confused as to whether there was two trig points here... Found one at the listed co-ords and another a short distance away at S35° 16.195 E149° 09.505.. The area was crawling with students today so was a bit funny trying to take my photo with the Trig Points...

07-Jun-11
Got here as part of the WWFM event, I am in the group photos Smile

05-Jun-11
I was there in green and gold and blue all over.
Now all we need is the group photos.

I have an image from ACT Mapi that notes the trig and the survey mark.
You can see the trig (the column) is casting a shadow.
7463274819.jpg

The survey mark should probably have some controversial yellow posts next to it.

04-Jun-11
After the WWFM event it was great to join in a group photo for this trig. This is our first trig and what a great spot. Thanks Tealby for organizing the event and taking us all to this trig.

04-Jun-11
So the question still remains as to what is the actual trig - at the time we were all pretty sure the survey mark is the official spot. Needless to say there were several photos taken at various spots, so hopefully we have our bases well & truly covered. One of the easiest trigs I've visited - and certainly the biggest group I have been with.

04-Jun-11
Found and photographed along with the multitude--thanks Tealby

04-Jun-11
Tiger-Monkey and I missed the group photo, but Tealby was kind enough to take another shot for us. Touch windy up here, chilly but nice! (I wonder if it is that chilling when it's summer? hmmmm...)

04-Jun-11
Oh...ok, so i've already found this trig before! (Two times, if you really want to get technical!)

Found with everyone after the WWFM event today Smile

04-Jun-11
A super east find today - I followed the crowd after the WWFM and didn't even have to take the group photo! Thanks all for the company on the walk Wink

04-Jun-11
found after the WWFM along with a whole pile of cachers Tealby to upload group photo, geodog enjoyed the fresh mountain air.

Catching up on logging some GCA trig finds.

Found this on 11 Feb 2011 on a wet rainy afternoon. Had trouble trying to get photo using phone to show GPS in picture and the location. Close up of pole didn't work so only have this bad shot....

18-Feb-11
Headed up for this one this afternoon. Made the GZ ok, grab the photo, and was off. Love the views from here.

Thanks for the fun.....

GCA 41 - 3491 - Catching up on logging some GCA Trig 'finds'...

Found this one on various occasions - including 22 Dec 2009 while finding GC cache The Pole Position Again. I have always enjoyed visiting Mt Ainslie and the wonderful views...

TFTC !!

12-Jan-11
I found this with blossom* and bubbles_baby on a very damp and misty morning

12-Jan-11
Well this was the weirdest trig I've seen but it's a post at the top of a hill. But no other marks. I wonder what's under the locked cover? We met bubbles_baby here to admire the mists over Canberra Very Happy

04-Dec-10
Wow. There is SO many butterflies around GZ! Twas pretty cool watching them flutter around me madly.

Had to use really dodgy brick-camera phone to take a picture. such bad quality! Smile

And Gnome de Grr III (GA2808) is posing ontop of it, to show i really am there. I'm a Gnome, duh!

(Edit: Found with Strike-a-light and Blossom* ..see the logs above. Very Happy)

27-Nov-10
168. Been too long getting around to some of these. Had some spare time while FFP was being pampered so headed up out and about. Fairly warm today and the road up was covered with swarms of military masochists running up over through and around this mountain. Plenty of sweat stains around. Top views as usual from up here.

Found with AmethystPig while on an 8 hour, 11 cache, 1 trig point trip all over Mt Ainslie on foot. Phew, tough day!

Did this one while on a day-assault of the Mt Ainslie caches - great views, especially at night. First trig point and GCA log - hopefully the first of many.

21-Oct-10
Great views, thanks for bringing me here.

A quick grab at lunch time with no tourists here today. Spent a little time observing the scenery before heading back to work.
