Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

This trig point is on Mt Aitken in Craigieburn. The trig point involves jumping a fence but its on housing estate land destined to be parkland. You can park your car on Kinglake Place and walk from there. Its not too far. From the hill you can see a long way in all directions. Worth a look and interesting to see the housing estates being cut into the country side.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

2nd surprise trig point in 1 day. good views of Melbourne from here.

22-Jan-23
The roadworks around Craigieburn was insane. i could not find a way to get close to this one. I came in from 3 different sides. The problem is not near the trig, but there seems to be a 2km corridor of work going on and it seemed impossible to cross it to get to the trig. I'm sure the locals know...but I bet they are frustrated.

A windy day. A short walk up the grass for excellent commanding views.

I was finding another cache just meters away so decided to claim this one.
spotted a couple of friendly grey kangaroos and a big red fox while climbing the hill.
great views from the top.

I should have grabbed this a long time ago, as it is my closest to work GA cache, but it took a nearby GC cache to finally get me up here and appreciatie the views offered here. thanks Smile

found it. excellent 360 degree views.

No problems here (apart from logging the wrong trig to start...). Managed to get close but the nearby fences told me to go no further.

Great views from this spot.

On my return from a trip to Melbourne I detoured via Craigieburn for a couple of Trig Points. Cold, damp and very windy on the top of the hill today.

Work put me close enough to Mt. Aitken this morning that I figured a nice pre-lunch ramble was in order.

It's a nice little workout up the hill from the nearby estate, and getting over the wire fences (never read the logs beforehand, but recognized the significance of the insulators on one of them) just adds to the adventure. A few quick photos in the chilly, blustery conditions, and I was happily on my way and back home before the weather turned to garbage.

This was the second of two Trig Points on this afternoon's escape from the ratrace. And it was a lot tougher than the other one Surprised. We parked about 160 metres from GZ but couldn't find an easy way to get there Sad. After a shocking experience along the eastern fence, we mosied along the south side before sliding under the fence and finally grabbing the shot at 14:15.

Great views but did anybody happen to mention that there was an electric fence around the site Shocked?!?!

Thanks TeamGeoPlesk.

Houses are getting very close to this trigpoint now! I decided not to jump the fences as people were watching from their backyards, I wasn't sure who owned the land, didn't want any trespassing charges.

Cow Doo every where. Once the houses get built on this corner could be quite a walk to get this one. Nice views. T4TC

Well after what seemed like a marathon of suburban back streets the navigator got us within walking distance of the top of the hill and the goal.
I will take your word for it about this being public land as it really didn’t feel right jumping fences into a paddock that is obviously used as grazing land but we continued on to the summit and were rewarded with the magnificent 360 degree views of the city in the distance, the surrounding countryside and encroaching suburbia.
Our thanks to TeamGeoPlesk for listing the cache and bringing us to this spot.
We are really enjoying these Trig Point caches

A quick climb to the top of the hill from the named parking area.
Very windy today but the views from the top are magnificent (as per usual for a TP).
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks TeamGeoPlesk for listing this cache on GCA. I certainly enjoyed visiting the location for the excellent views across the lakes, towards the city and into the country.
