Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar , resembling a navigation beacon (Which this one Doesn't have). It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies. (This trigpoint was not in the initial database uploaded to GCA).

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Additional information:

This trigpoint is located on top of "Whitecliffs", near Rye, overlooking Port Phillip Bay. It is a short climb up a well-structured pathway to the trigpoint, where you will find spectacular views across Rye to the east, and Blairgowrie to the west.

Please don't climb the fence to reach the trigpoint - a photo from the railing (a few metres from the TP) is close enough for a find!

I came across on the car ferry for a day with a friend from my school years. This was my first trig find while I waited to meet up in Mount Martha. Great location

18-Nov-23
Lovely climb up to the lookout, can't beat an ocean view. On a clear day you can see Melbourne's skyline.

22-Oct-22
The last day of our holiday and we're making our way up the bay to the Spirit terminal, we took the opportunity to do a last few GCA caches to finish off the tally. TFTT

06-Oct-22
After fish n chips from the nearby Shark Shack, a nice walk past the old historic Very Happy Lime Kiln, up nearly 160 steps, and the reward of a great view at the top.

22-May-22
Out and about finding some GC caches at the southern portion of the peninsula today and couldn't help but notice the trig point staring me right in the face at the gz for one of them.
Sure enough, there it is on the GCA map and the necessary photo was taken shortly after.
Turns out that this is my 300th GCA find too! Thrilling!

Thanks to Geocaching Australia for this trig point listing! Very Happy

Passing through here today and I've had this one on my list for a while now so what else could I do?
A short climb from the caravan park but I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere as I ended up outside of the path...oops.
Never mind got there in the end, great view from up here. Smile

I found a photo I took of this trig on this date stored in my computer! I logged
GC56DG3 on the same date as well, which seems to be the closest cache to it!
Unfortunately it is not a selfie, but it was taken at 2:16pm by myself
Thanks!

First of 20 odd GCA tody. Parked down below and took the track through the sand and then found the main track. From there, the trig was an easy reach....

Thanks for the trig....and great views.

I have driven pass this trigpoint many times during summer and today I stopped to take a photo and admire the view.

I was using my phone as GPSr and camera so the photo is a bad selfie.

18-Nov-16
While caching in Rye today we passed by this trig point so made our way along the top of the ridge then down to the trig beacon to take the required photos. As it was a warm day with clear skies the view from this trig were spectacular.

16-Feb-13
Found today after diving at Portsea on the way home. Was actually here for a GZ cache but noticing the Trig Point knew that a GCA cache would be here. Some great views of the Bay seen such as Arthur's seat and South Fort island. Thanks for bringing me here. Cool

We came looking for the GC cache here, but a muggle decided the bench would be a good place to sit down for a little nap. Fortunately, this cache did not require looking for hidden treasure.
Thanks Geocaching Australia

We'd come down here looking for Low Blow, but on reading the notes realised it wasn't the find for today and the gear we were in. So instead we hopped up the stairs for a quick trig. Just as good, especially with this view! Very Happy

A TrigPoint by the sea. Wheeeeeeee!
A quick stroll up the stairs (not too hard) to get to the TP as it looks out over the sea. I wonder how many people know what this thing is for?
*Overall Experience: 3*

Found with Wild Josh. A nighttime trig find. Easy enough find even without a torch. Full moon gave us some light.

16-Apr-11
Found with draw four on the way home from Sorrento. Lucky it was a full moon. Lights looked good on mountains and bay.

04-Feb-11
On my way back from Sorrento to the airport I dropped by to grab this trig. An unusual design compared with the NSW standard. Will add photos tonight.

Having failed at the nearby GC Cache, we thought we'd at least put this one under our belt.
Unfortunately the vista today was reduced by mist but we can imagine the view that would be available on a good visibility day.

16-Apr-10
This popped up on my Tom Tom.
So I stopped to log it.

Haha - Oakydog, there WAS one very close to here (less than 100m), but it was recently muggled, and Team Goanna are yet to replace it! Low Blow.

08-Mar-10
Found between showers Lovely spot Would make a great spot for a GC cache hint hint

08-Feb-10
Walking along the beach at Rye, this trigpoint screamed out to me to be added to the database at GCA. I made the easy climb up the cliffs, and enjoyed the views, took the coordinates, and claimed the FTF on this trigpoint. It's certainly worth coming to see this one, particularly at sunset!
