Description

Ashfield TS653

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Ashfield.

Serial number is: TS653.

Last Inspected on: May 2, 1985.

Elevation is: 83 metres.

Attempting the nearby Peace Park cache, I noticed this trig tower on top of the Water Tower, so had to add it on GCA.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

#GA2258 - 11:55; After a few days in Sydney with the geohoney and a couple of the in-laws, the time had come to head for home again. This should have been the first stop on what proved to be a a poorly planned route out of town, which meant I had to back track to collect this trig and another which should have been number two on the list Brick Wall Anyway, made my way to GZ and grabbed the snaps I needed for this find. Found today while out collecting the GC multi cache in Peace Park.
The trig is viewable from Peace Park, a great park, lots of local history and a large playground for the geokiddies to play one. Snapped this photo of the trig while waiting for muggles to vacate GZ for the GC multi. Could not include my GPS as I am caching by phone at the moment.

I had to explain to some friendly neighbours as to why I was taking photos of a big water tank...sometimes I think the truth is just a little too boring for most people. Nice people though.

Down in the area today getting a kit desexed so took the day off to go to caching rather than just heading back to the office for a few hours. Time to grab this trig that I hadn't been to before, photographed from the top of the nearby lookout tower.

I'd found the GC cache here previously but at that time I didn't know about looking out for trig points. So I popped into the Peace Park for my new GPS's first official trig point finding selfie.

Easy to get a good picture of this one from Peace Park, Ashbury. There are some great views from the park tower.
The Ashfield reservoir, WS3 is listed on the Sydney Water web site as a heritage item and the site has some interesting information about it. It is one of a group of four similar elevated reservoirs in the Sydney Water system, build in 1912 and has a capacity of 4.6ml.

I had just stopped a bit north of here to photograph the Portuguese SDA Church, and noticed this trig on a reservoir not far away. However the camera wasn't very cooperative at including myself in the shot. Thanks

I thought I had done this ages ago, but realised this week it was still unlogged, so I took the chance to correct that today - it looks more like a trig in the bush at this angle.

Found this nice Trig today on a little walk around Ashfield. Love the water reservoir, great structure, well worth the visit just for that. Incidentally there used to be a survey beacon on the side of the reservoir but that is now long gone, last seen in 85-86.
