Description

This trigpoint overlooks the Anglesea power station.

SamCarter came across this trigpoint while retrieving a moveable cache that was lurking nearby. Best access seems to be from a dirt track that heads southwest right at the junction of Coalmines Rd and the Great Ocean Road. This dirt track was fine for the GeoSuby, and should be fine for 2WD vehicles with reasonable clearance. Just a short walk to the west of the trigpoint along the road there is a wooden lookout platform, which affords views over the Anglesea power station and the mining area beyond. (The road gets a bit "serious" at this point, so you may choose not to take your car any further!)

Standard GCA information for trigpoint caches follows:

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies. This particular trigpoint was discovered independently and entered manually.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

A bumpy short drive up to the spot. The trig is lying down, but the badge is there.

This one was quite an adventure. The GPS took us well down the road and then wanted us to travel up some goat track to GZ. As we were in the motorhome we decided to abandon this one but when we were nearly back to the main road Mr Beetle noticed a likely track and by following that we ended up being able to drive all the way to GZ.
When we stopped a bike rider appeared and he looked quite surprised to see us up here in this vehicle!!
The vanes are laying on the ground so a couple of pictures have been taken.

Made our way up here today with the roads in good condition to find this poor Trigpoint on its side.
The views are getting obliterated now by the trees which is good, as well as the defunct power station being filled in and replanted.

Found on a great geocaching day out in Anglesea with our friends, suss vulture. While getting the GC traditional up here, I snapped a photo of the trig for the benefit of the Cerberus war effort – hope this helps! Beautiful area – TFTC GCA! Clan Cerberus

After packing up for the final time from The Surf Coast Mega, I headed for home, but not before finding a couple of caches and Trig Points along the way Trig easily found and standing strong. Great Views all around.

Like all the others over the last couple of days we arrived here because
A) We always seek out trig points, or
B) We came here to find the nearby GC cache.

Either way we're glad we came.

A quick find today as the Trig point stands out easily at GZ. Thanks for this geocache today.

12/11/2016 - 2.40 pm - 3rd Geo-Au cache for the day while out doing other 'things' at The Surf Coast Geocaching Event with Wal-len, Surefoot24 & Trisam (signing as Bass Coasters for the weekend) We were a bit rushed & managed photos with me in this time instead of behind the camera but didn't really get a lot of time to enjoy the location on Saturday but managed a few extra photos before the descent.
YEP, we believed our finding device to give us good directions & it took us the 4WD way instead of the less difficult way! Hmmm ... glad I got to see sky & not the track we traversed on the way up, I think! Going down that first really steep pinch was a breeze for the 'steep descent' mode on the vehicle. Wink I think some local knowledge might have been of assistance to us, but we managed to get up & back with no dramas so all was good. I hope to visit this area with a bit more time to enjoy everything. Thanks for the cache!

I found this cache while competing in the Surf Coast 2016 Mega event Tournament.
I was not in charge of the camera so I took a photo of my team near the beacon, and one of the marker. My team didn't have time for me to take any more photos.

#GA1100 - 08:40; Day 3 of the Melbourne Mega Mission with Sol de lune and we were now in Anglesea and taking a round about route to the Mega via a couple of trigs. This one turned out to be a relatively easy drive by as we parked close, grabbed a snap and a nearby GC cache. TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

With a Daddy-Daughter school camp just around the corner, I figured that I'd drop by here while on the way home as I'd already been here for 2 GC caches without logging this one Embarassed. I knew the way in from the previous visits and we were soon taking the pickies at 13:55.

Thanks SamCarter.

Staying slightly nearby, i wanted to get a few caches knocked out of the way.

Hmm yep, bit of a walk! Lovely little spot!

06-Jun-11
Found 12.00 noon
Followed the track stated on the trig page and as we drove up the narrow track we nearly took out a rouge cyclist tearing down the hill who just appeared round a sharp corner, we managed to ditch the car to the side to avoid a head-on ..... the cyclist did not even brake or look back as he whizzed past ..... phew.
Back on the track we enjoyed rutted surface to get to the trig, managed to park right next to it to take the necessary photo, we then walked the short distance to admire the great view down towards the power station and the open mine.

Like others, we were in the area knocking off EMUs (the caches, not the birds !! LaughingLaughing ) and spotted this, so we may as well claim the find on it too.

We'd parked back down where the track to the lookout meets up with the track that runs parallel to the Ocean Rd and walked the final 200 or so metres.

#170 #10/23 Huge (for me) cache day with lochb and PrincessDiala. Whilst I was at EMU5, I decided to have a pic taken at the trig point as it is very close by. Great views from here. For me it was an easy stroll from the scout camp but PrincessDiala and lochb approached from below. Thanks Sam!

Visiting E.M.U.5 hidden nearby, lochb and I had taken the more strenuous route to the top. Steep walk up! Quick jog down!
Views of the coalmine from here are amazing, its SO far in the distance, and it looks SO tiny!
Thanks SamCarter for listing this TrigPoint!

The trusty commodore got me straight to GZ.

Not sure it would have in winter though.

Great views from the lookout.

Found at 3.40pm. With all the rain we've had I parked at the junction of the Great Ocean Road and Coalmine Rd then walked up the track to the trig point. Easy walk of around 400m. Good views from the top over the Power Station and back to Anglesea. Thanks samcarter. Noticed that the trig said Scrubby Hill Trig.

Returned to this Trig Point after missing it a few months ago whilst doing the E.M.U series.
Photo with Nigel Nissan.
Didn't attempt the down hill track this time as it has been raining alot and a bit slippery for this road tyre 4WD.

I came this way in order to pick up a moveable cache that was hiding on the lookout. As the moveable had a DNF as its last recorded log I wasn't totally confident about the likelihood of a smiley on this detour, so, when I came across the trig point, I thought at least I'll be able to get something for my trouble (provided I actually organise a trig point cache page!). Anyway, I found the moveable, AND I've made a trig point page, so I get two smilies for the price of what might have been none.
