Description

Old cairn style trig point with timber post.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I was with Barb2e on a trip into Kowen Forest. We managed to reach most of the hill tops, so were able to claim the trigs on offer today. This hill has the name one of our work buildings is named for.

Thanks
Albida

F(H)ound It! 3:10pm

SpecimenX and I were out grabbing a few more of the Kowen Roo series.
MAN! that is a steep hill. The Ridgeo-pup tried not to lose her patience with our slow progress. "Four legs good - Two Legs Bad!" especially when climbing hills Smile . A lovely old style TRIG.

Geocaching Australia (GCA) Cache Find Number 1164 - 11563 overall cache finds.

Found during a run up here doing the Kowan Roo. While I mainly looked for GC caches, when an easy GCA cache comes along we go for that as well. Trigs are particularly nice to track down and find. I was very happy when they became part of the GCA cache family. Its especially satisfying if you have made a big climb up for one ! I have also now joined dragonZone in Clan Cerberus, so there are more reasons to find those GCA caches. Its interesting to find the many different types of trigs. From the traditional metal legs and vanes, to the concrete base with vanes, to the ones on top of water tanks (especialy the red ones !), as well the new CORS type. When you look on a GCA map and see all those hundreds and hundreds of blue 'Z's it shows just how many there are out there. Shame so many are on private property and cannot be accessed at all. So as far as I'm concerned every trig that can be found and photographed is a real bonus !

Today was a big day for me. Did most of the back, head, ears and some of the front of the Roo before I'd had enough and was quite exhausted ! To top it off this trig was right at the top of the worst hill out here !

The trig was quickly 'found'. Piccie taken and posted.

Thanks Geocaching Australia !

Missed the trigs in this area the other day when I was turned back by the forest workers, but came in from a different angle today and had no problems....with no workers in sight at all. Grabbed my photos and headed off for the next one. All up about a 20klm ride.

A great bike ride out around this area today, although there wasn't much riding in this immediate area! We pushed the worst section then rode the last stretch. Going downhill to the south east it was unbelievably steep, almost to steep to walk bikes. It's a great old style trig, and views across toward Queanbeyan were great while we enjoyed some coffee and lunch.

Decided on a bike ride through Kowen forest today, and find a couple of trigs along the way. Bit of a steep bit to get up here – But at least the day had warmed up by now! Total ride of 25km very nice.

I had a gorgeous afternoon meandering through Kowen. This was my second trigpoint for the afteroon. The views along the way were great, and it was cool, moist and just serene (apart from when 5 guys on trail bikes whizzed past!).

Great spot, thanks.

A lovely SUB-ZERO morning for a MTB ride. Really quite pleasant riding around the forest trails. Glad my GPS has ALL the trails, one could get lost in there.
Coming from the South, WOW, what a doozy that last hill is.
Got some nice early morning pics. Then off to collect the other trig, and then Cooeeee back down the hills.

Went flying through one frozen puddle - CRUNCH Tinkle tinkle - that was THICK ice - broke like thick glass, bike OK.

First to find - Trig point 3 of 4 on my Kowen trek today. Easy to find but unless you have vehicle access to Kowen this will require a few kilometres of hiking or riding up and down some steep hills. Good view south from here. On to trig point 4... another first to find!
