Description

Awesome views at a Trig Near Byron Bay

Coopers Shoot Trig

I do not believe you can access the Trig itself as it appears to be on private land. However, you can get close on the nearby Coopers Shoot Road and the Trig is plain to see. It may be a little more then the recommended 50m away but I hope you agree the stunning views over Byron Bay and the Surrounds this location offers more then justifies this Trig Point being listed. On a clear day you can see for miles and miles including Mt Warning and Cape Byron. There is another closer vantage on Bangalow Road which is within 50m but the views are nowhere near as good. Co-Ords for the Point are approximate as obviously I couldnt take a reading and had to use Google Maps.

I looked up the Geoscience Australia site but have been unable to find the official lisiting. If someone comes up with a result here that would be great!

==================================================================

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

My 6th Trig visit of 12 today. I SOOOOOO wanted to jump over the fence and get closer.. could get some great images in this location! Oh well. I still enjoyed the visit. Thanks for the cache Smile

We've never loved the shooting of trigs from a distance, but this one we really had no choice. If there was a farmer in the field I would have asked permission, but with dozens of cattle roaming about we would never have helped ourselves..... great spot too...
addit - driving past today, we stopped and took a pic with our Panasonic Lumix zoom... our 'trig camera'..

I decided to go for drive today to find some caches near Byron. My lane of traffic was stopped on Bangalow Road due to roadworks. This allowed a quick check of directions and I turned up Coopers Shoot Road when released.

The trig is located on private land behind a fence but can be seen clearly from the road. It is a beautiful sunny day with views of Byron Bay looking towards the lighthouse. The sea a stunning shade of blue and grass a vivid shade of lush green. Thanks for trig.

Easy park and shoot for this trig.

well you can't really get closer to this without land owner permission. so I'm logging this the same as all the rest that have.

Note: Error loading pic through app. Pic lost.

Wow, this trig has some multi million dollar views but the best we were going get were from the locked gate. Shot a pic of Coopers Shoot from there. Wink

#GA2712 - 08:20; Day five of the 2018 Oz GeoMuster mission with Sol de lune. After a night in Ballina, the plan for today was to cache northward through Ballina to Byron Bay and then on to Kingscliff before turning south for home through Bangalow, Evans Head, New Italy, Yamba, Maclean and on to Kempsey for another overnight stay. After an early start, we hadn't gone far up the road when we saw evidence of a heavy shower not too long before we got there, so we seem to have dodged a bullet and got packed up with fairly dry gear. Following a successful run through to Cape Byron, we continued our journey, next stop Coopers Shoot. Sadly, the trig is out of bounds, so we took some long shots from the gate. Day 5 of the trip up the NSW coast with LuckyL10n after the Morisset event. Today was from Ballina to Kingscliff and back to Kempsey. A few more caches grabbed, with most being trigs...

This one is a paddock with a big No Trespass sign on the gate.....so the photo was snapped from there.

Thanks for yet another trig...

After a bit of hunting around Byron Bay for Waymarks (and potential ones) I headed on up to this trig point.
A minor track leads out to the trig, from a simple gate, with a "PRIVATE PROPERTY - No Trespassing" sign on it.
Being the KEEN trig hunter, that I am, I was prepared to take a walk in the wet grass, and see if there was a name plate on the concrete pedestal, that I could see on a zoomed photo from the fence line.
Unfortunately there is only the place where one has been dug out. The white pole and the black semi-circular vanes had been removed, and were lying in the grass, on the ocean side of the hill.
I took a few photos, and headed back.

Disappointed that it is on private property. Got as close as possible and took a couple of pics.

Found on the NSW leg of our Round Aust trip
Staying in Byron Bay for a few days and today we took the kids out for a look at the sights, found some caches and some waymarks.

Couldn't get to this one, could see it in the distance, no cowshit smell today, lots of traffic to make you nervous by the side of a road, LOL!

A strong smell of cowshit here. Thanks.

After visiting Byron Bay drove back to Ballina the long way to grab this trig. Great views today! Stunningly clear and sunny. Photo of the trig plus one of Byron Bay lighthouse in the distance.

On my way back from Byron today I thought I’d check out how close I could get to this trig. I got to the fence and took a photo or two. It would be great to be able to walk over to the trig – the view would be spectacular! The sky was crystal clear today, the winter sun was just beautiful, and the grass was lush and green. The cows grazing in the trigpoint’s paddock certainly had nothing to complain about! Thanks to Zal for listing this one on the site.

Decided to tackle this one on a run up the coast. Not the best day for it as its been raining all day and low cloud meant no views today. This is on private property, and about 10 years ago i happen to walk out to the trig with the owner of the property. He has since died and the property sold. Due to its high location over Byron, it is home also to some private repeater stations on the edge of the property.
In years past the mentioned owner opened his property to the Regions scouts, which used the property for a yearly scout jamboree which brought cubs, scouts, guides from all over the regions to this property for a 3 days event.
Looks like a track is maintained to the trig point.

I was heading out to a nearby GC Cache, Southern View - GC1NG0F, admiring the amzaing Winter's day I had scored and the spectacular surrounding countryside when my eyes caught a familiar shape on a hill. TRIG POINT! Question Wait, why isnt it listed? Oh well, is now! hahaha Twisted Evil I know it is on private property and you cant 'touch' it Anxious , but you can get close enough for a photo... and what a photo! Try to get a good clear day and you wont be disappointed I promise!
