Description

Megalong TS10446

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Megalong.

Serial number is: TS10446.

Last Inspected on: November 20, 1979.

Elevation is: 994 metres.

This dramatically placed trigpoint, overlooking the Megalong Valley, is accessable via the fire trail and smaller trails off the end of Pulpit Hill Road, Katoomba. It's about a 2.5 km walk to the cliff edge trig from the car park.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to access.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on 'Log this Cache' and placing an 'Archived' log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty/terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Awesome.... we weren't sure we'd get all the way out here today, but as it turns out we had time to fly out in front of the rest of the family to get this and the nearby GC trad. This sort of trig is why we cache...

MrT was heading home from a few days camped at Turon NP, and headed out to do the Megalong trig as he had time to spare. TFTT

Found on this clear winter morning on the way to one of the GCs. Another "Rooftop" beacon. The guy wires aren't helping against the wind anymore and I imagine it gets quite strong out here. Otherwise in good nick.

Came out here for four caches today, and as a bonus found a trig close to the Radiata Plateau cache.

10-Feb-14
A brilliant summer's day caching with bisygisy and yttam upon Radiata Plateau and Megalong trig clear on the horizon, and ever overlooking the vista spread below. A top location well worth the easy walk out.

Was out on a great expedition of the area with whitemushroom and yttam. ANother trig to my slowly growing tally. I like these trigs with grand vistas.

Altaire guaranteed me that this trig is well worth a visit. We had lunch here after our descent to Esgard Pass. The view was outstanding.

21-Nov-12
I went for a walk on Radiata Plateau this evening, to check on my GC cache, map out some of the tracks for OSM, and log this trig. All 3 missions accomplished. I even went for a bit of a climb on the pagodas near the trig. Great views.

Easily the best trig we've been to so far. Really like the ones where you can actually walk up to the trig itself and the views from this one are spectacular.

15-Jul-12
I was out here today with the family to find Jonossan's nearby cache, 'Radiata Plateau'. We passed right by this trig, so I thought I would log it. Brilliant views from here.

A great chance to walk and talk with my youngest. A trig and the view made it more enjoyable!

Found today,a lovely walk from Katoomba station. Pretty straightforward, follow the track all the way, near the end turn left and the Trig will soon be in sight. The view from there is magnificent wee=ll worth the trip for that alone.

I actually visited and photographed this amazingly positioned trig on 26 June 2010, while logging the nearby GC traditional geocache. Arriving at the cliff-edge site just before sunset, I couldn't believe the panorama spread out before me, and think the gallery photo I contributed is one of the most 'romantic' trig photographs around. What a beautiful place! It's a bit of a long walk (2.5 km) and the sheer cliffs near GZ are definitely 'dangerous' if you don't take care, but this is one trig that's more than just a ho-hum drive-by view of something way up on top of a water tower. You definitely won't forget your visit to this one.
