Description

Dural South Res New TS?

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Dural South Res New.

Serial number is: TS number not allocated.

Last Inspected on: 1978.

Elevation is: 249 metres.

This red-coloured trig is fastened to the top of a large greenish water tower on Old Northern Road, between the intersection with New Line Road and Round Corner. Across Old Northern Road from the trig is the intersection of Jaffa Road and Derriwong Road. The trig can be view from Old Northern Road or from the car park of the Salvation Army Centre.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to access.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on 'Log this Cache' and placing an 'Archived' log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty/terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Out doing some Easter Saturday group caching around northern Sydney, stopped off here on the way to Kenthurst. After getting a photo at the first reservoir and waiting an age for a break in the traffic, we headed around the corner and eventually found a spot where we could see the trig discs on top of this one. Many thanks for the listing.

We pulled up just before the bus stop but couldn't spot it, had to reposition further west along Old Northern Rd to spot it peeking out over the sides of the res....

With a cache run in Castle Hill this afternoon with JJCC, we first located TP5470 Dural South Res trig before driving around onto Old Northern Road and pulling over just passed the tank. Although we noticed the trig whilst driving in the other direction towards the roundabout, we had to walk up the road a bit further in order to gain sight of the trig on the tank side of the road.

Out on a Dural frog drop run and took the opportunity to photograph the local trigs. This photo is not great but the little red disc is there; trust me.

Yep, got this eventually, the hard part was finding a spot to get a clear pic (not that my pic is all that clear either)

I thought the idea of these things is that they are supposed to be visible! After heading west along the road it eventually came into sight through the trees. Without the big zoom couldn't get a closeup of it, but managed something with the pocket digital cam.

Found this trig on a tour through the Hills area. This area is a bit like a 2 for 1 deal. Another tower and another trig.

25-Apr-11

23-Mar-11
My second trig this afternoon, doing well. I didn't get close enough to see the colour way up there though!

15-Mar-11
Found this Trig with pjmpjm during this afternoon Geohunt. Very nice and unusual Red Trig on top of the massive reservoir. It would seem that this Trig was never given a TS number and probably was among the last Trigs established, before the advent of professional GPS use for survey work.

Coming back from Round Corner caches, I stopped and could almost take the pic from my car, but though best to get as close as I could. I've taken 2 shots, as the one with my gps, while a great shot of it, doesn't show the trig to well. Smile

Found the water tank and the Black Trig but how do I find the Red Trig? Ahh. Yes there it is and I was fairly close too.

03-Dec-10
Out in the area for gnomes and this time found a place where we could see the trig after only finding the other 'Black' one last time. Got the pic - will upload later - gnomes to log!

30-Oct-10
Once we turned out aound, we could see it from the other side of the road.

Spotted this trig while photographing the nearby South Dural Trig (Black). This water tower is even bigger than the other one a couple of hundred metres away. It's kind of fun to see a red trig. (Photographed one in the Blue Mountains this past weekend.) I assume they gave it a different colour to distinguish it from the adjacent (black) trig.
