Description

Locale: Gan Gan

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a faded, worn black disc on top a concrete pillar. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

This Trig is located at the Gan Gan Lookout with spectacular views of the Tomaree peninsula

An awesome lookout here and it was good to be able to put a name to the spectacular red flowers found in the area.
Both lookouts had their binoculars well and truly covered, not sure why but perhaps they have been vandalised.
Thanks.

We took advantage of (relatively) cooler weather today, and adventured around Corlette and Nelson Bay, grabbing 7 caches and this cool trig, with awesome views....

29-Dec-17
House-sittiing for the holidays, and after a cool-off in the ocean, we decided to pop up here in the hope of some magnificent views. We were not disappointed! I’m currently using my phone as my gps, so it’s only present in the photo in shadow form!

We went to Fingal Bay today for a swim. After that we explored Nelsons Bay and after seeing a wild emu and echidna we decided to come to this lookout on the way home to show the kids a pair of Sea Eagles and their nest too and we spotted the Trig so I took a quick selfie.

24-Jan-16
On dive trip to Terrigal and Nelsons Bay I stopped for a few caches along the way.

Thanks

What a wonderful view from up here! Despite ordinary weather on Australia Day we could still see for miles in every direction. I love trig caches, they're the best! Mrs MajuraHathi and I were taken by the sensational Gymea Lilies here.
Thanks for the trig cache.
Cheers

Found on Australia Day while at Port Stephens. While getting the GC cache a few metres away, we quickly took a photo of this trig. Outstanding views from up here, despite some fog covering some sections of the view. TFTC GCA! Clan Cerberus

2250 refound this trig from being in the area back in 2008 for "… and then", a cache that was archived. Am sure I don't have those photos any more, so came back to re-photograph it. Quite a bit more transmitting power here now. And the viewing platform is great. Also found a SSM where I parked my car outside the gate.

Today we visited the Gan Gan Lookout above Nelson Bay. The views from this vantage point are superb, even with heavy rain squalls rolling through the area. We found the Trig Point and a photo recording our visit has been added to the Gallery. Thanks for the cache.

21-Apr-13
On our way out of Nelson Bay after a lovely holiday we stopped at the lookout, and spotted the inevitable trig here. TFTT!

01-Jul-12
Came across this trig after finding a GC nearby. No mast or vanes, just the instrument mount on a concrete pedestal. The nameplate is gone but it now carries a plaque commemorating the opening of the lookout.

But which is the trig point. GPS took me to the orange marker, but I reckon it is more likely the big white marker.

11-Sep-11
nice spot

16-Jul-11
Managed to grab this trig before a hoard of muggles showed up which meant I had to leave and come back later to grab the nearby cache. I love it up here.

10-Apr-11
Another one missing it's black disk. Oh well. Certainly the views up here are worth the visit even without the two available caches. Gave Anna a better understanding of just how big Port Stephens is after staying for a couple of nights. Cheers.

14-Dec-10
Came for 1 cache, left with 2.
