Description

Survey marker ST1159 on highest Tasmanian peak

Climbing MT Ossa deserves a geocache prize for all that effort required to scale it. The trig survey marker point with a gps or person photo will claim the prize. This survey marker is not quite the highest point.

The highest point on Mt Ossa is the top of a prominent rock approx 40m NE of the bronze disc. This point has an AHD(Tas) height of 1617m, on flat rock approximately 40m SW of pinnacle of Mt Ossa.

Mount Ossa has quite amazing views of the surounding mountains and park area. Just across from it is Pelion East that is also a great view and much shorter and easier climb except for the last 100M of rock scrambling up the rock spires.

We carried full packs up Ossa on this trip and camped for the night on the highest peak in Tasmania. Some of our group had done this numerous times before. Not many people would have done this? This was my first overnighter on Ossa and planning to do it again next year.

MT Ossa is part of the overland track and Cradle Mountain National Park and rules apply at certain times of the year that may affect access. Check the parks site and especialy the weather conditions before attempting this walk. You will be in an alpine region and weather can change for the worse at any time of the year, be prepared.

Hiking the Overland Track and made the climb up Ossa. Nothing to add to what others have said.

17-Feb-23
Came in for a couple of days specifically to climb Ossa as it was forecast to be perfect weather. Which it was. 100th Abel for half of Altaire. There were about 30 others who climbed the peak the same day. The trig is about 30m from the Abel high point.

Climbed Mt Ossa as part of my Overland trip in Jan 2019. Loved the views - had trouble working out which was the 'true' summit but found the survey marker without issue.

Great spot!

Made it to the top after our first effort was thwarted by the weather. Picked a great day with some top views to be had. Did this as a side trip on a 6 day walk from Lee's Paddocks & looping back to the car park via Lakes Meston & Myrtle.

My first trip up Mt Ossa was in the early 1980s when I was just a teenager....since then I have taken the walk to Mt Ossa another four times, with this photo of my most recent trip....now much older. I'm on the right, with my friends Bec and Jane. Jane is standing directly over the trig.

The DaFiChNi's climbed Mt Ossa during one of their Overland Track expeditions. Quite heavy snowfall covered the trig point, but a few happy snaps show us at the trig point, and the actual highest point, which is the prominent rock NE of trig point.

Simply brilliant!!

What a top spot Clapping We were lucky enough to have a very clear day and wonderful views in every direction.

A-MAZ-ING. We were incredibly lucky to have a perfect day for this climb and we could see forever from the top. We even saw Lake St Clare to the south, our destination in a few days.

I don't think I realised this was a trig cache so don't have a photo of the trig. I do have the numbers and letters on the trig...

What better way is there to finish off the year. Well worth the effort for the views. Thanks

Just arrived back from the Overland Walk to some internet reception so we could log this. Please find the geotagged photo of our FTF taken 29/12/2010. The most challenging cache I've done so far. TFTC and TFTFTF Dancing

Had to wait quite a while to get the pics off the other walkers camera to log this one. Obviously some one else can claim the FTF.
