Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ and to photograph it.

Official Code: Permanent Mark PM58003

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Access: This is within the Univeristy of Newcastle, Callaghan campus, The 'trick' is to find somewhere to park, especially during the week, so it may be best to start here; as there is a bit more parking for the Ray Watt Oval.

Parked in the uni carpark and walked along this old test line. The test line is younger than the uni so it would be interesting to know if the uni grounds extended to this point when the trigs were built and if they had a secondary use of helping the students learn to use the instruments.

Doing a round of caches in Newcastle and saw at least as many GCA caches (mainly trigs) in this area as GC caches, came for both and conquert most.

While staying near Newcastle we went on a GCA cache finding tour around the area and this trig was one we found. The required photo has been added to the gallery. What a huge University. TFTT

#GA2656 - 11:25; Day three of the 2018 Oz GeoMuster mission with Sol de lune. After a day hitting the geoart trail put out for the muster with Sdl and albida33 yesterday, today was all about finding GCA caches and perhaps picking up a dragonZone or two in the process. The plan for the day was to start in Morisset (naturally enough), work our way around Lake Macquarie and in to Newcastle, then on to Maitland and Abermain before heading back to camp. There had been a change of plans when there was a heavy overnight fog which left our tarps quite wet, so we decided to hit the trail, then return to camp to collect our swags once things had dried out later in the day, before heading for points north. We had finished collecting trigs around the lake and were now in the suburbs. It was nice and quiet at the University today and we were able to park close by to the trig, one of two in our first testline for the day. TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

Day three of an Easter trip with LuckyL10n to the 2018 Morisset Mega. Headed up via the northern beach suburbs of Sydney to grab a few trigs and dragonZones along the way. From there it was a trip around the lake to find a good assortment of trigs. A great day out while heading further north.

The first of two testlines we did today. No problems with this one and the trig was soon snapped. Very quiet at the Uni on Easter Sunday.

Another trig and another dragonZone crossed off. Thanks for the fun....

A trig power-trail! We're up for that..... I thought it might be quiet at the uni on a Saturday lunchtime, but the place was packed - we got stuck in traffic!

And the last in the series. Managed to park next to this one so you can see part of the van in the photo. It also helped to distinguish which marker was which.
A quieter area than the other 3.
Thanks.

I parked in the Football oval parking area, and took a short walk over to the concrete pedestal survey marker PM58003
Photographed at 1040, and noted the black cover on top identifying it with "NSW Trig Station, Do Not Disturb". The name plate was still there.

As detailed by rogerw3 there is a cover on the concrete pedestal stating: "NSW Trig Station, Do Not Disturb"

Found today on a long weekend trip up the coast.

Out in Newcastle for a day's trigging.
While these are not registered as Trigs and do not have TS numbers recently the PVC white caps have been removed and replaced by the triangular aluminum instrument mount familiar on Trig Stations. Further a new type of cover clearly marked 'NSW Trig Station' is protecting the mount.

This appears to be a not-trig, but a survey marker, so we'll archive this to avoid confusion.

24-Mar-11
This is NOT a trig!!! It is part of the Newcastle Test Line. Surveyors use these testlines to calibrate their Electronic Distance Measuring (EDM) equipment. (See Gallery)

14-Mar-11
Weren't these archived because they weren't considered trigs? Permanent markers perhaps?

The archive note should have said so.

13-Mar-11
Found these quick four today on our way home after caching around the lake. Interesting to have four in sight of each other. You must be right the Trigs must be for surveying students.

13-Mar-11
It's still there and easy to get to. So easy we drove past today and took some photos.

Found this trig point while working in the area.
It seems that this series of Trigs may have been set up for the surveying students at the University of Newcastle.

There are four Trigs within a short distance named Newcastle Test Line PM58000-58003
