Description

Ryde TS3989R

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Ryde.

Serial number is: TS3989R.

Last Inspected on: January 16, 1979.

Elevation is: 97 metres.

Passive Trig Station, the white Cross is the aiming point

Old parish maps show "Ryde T.S" right where the church spire is located, in Church Street, Ryde. The large white cross on top is apparently the trig. GC cache "She's Apples" is at the edge of the cemetery too.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to access.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on 'Log this Cache' and placing an 'Archived' log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty/terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I have passed this numerous times, but today out early with WaywardWoman, I finally remembered before we got to it. A quick photo and headed on. TFTT

I didn't even need to get out of the car for this one.

05-Jul-17
Passed by here late at night.

11-Jan-17
Collected a few trigs while on a work trip to Sydney. This was one and nice to see another on a church. We don't get them like that in the A.C.T.

20-Nov-16
Caught the bus to Ryde today and the bus stopped very conveniently right outside the church. Being a Sunday there was even singing coming from the church which made for an enjoyable photography moment. Nice to come to this side of Victoria Rd for once.

I've seen this church many times before but I've never had a proper look. It's actually quite an interesting building with quite pretty grounds. The age of the tombstones is a nice piece of history too.

Found today on my way to Uni, TFTC.

Geocaching Australia (GCA) Cache Find Number 1072 - 10542 overall cache finds.

Found during a run up to the big Lane Cove Event with Sol de Lune, Toy Hunters and LuckyL10n when we decided to grab a bunch of trigs as well. While I mainly looked for GC caches, when an easy GCA cache comes along we go for that as well. Trigs are particularly nice to track down and find. I was very happy when they became part of the GCA cache family. Its especially satisfying if you have made a big climb up for one ! I have also now joined dragonZone in Clan Cerberus, so there are more reasons to find those GCA caches. Its interesting to find the many different types of trigs. From the traditional metal legs and vanes, to the concrete base with vanes, to the ones on top of water tanks (especialy the red ones !), as well the new CORS type. When you look on a GCA map and see all those hundreds and hundreds of blue 'Z's it shows just how many there are out there. Shame so many are on private property and cannot be accessed at all. So as far as I'm concerned every trig that can be found and photographed is a real bonus !

The trig was quickly 'found'. Piccie taken and posted.

Thanks Geocaching Australia !

#GA498 - 14:55; The day had arrived and it was up at sparrows to join toyhunters, fitzy_1965 and Sol de lune for a trip to Sydney for the 'Let's Party - Come Celebrate Australia's First' Event. After the early start we had plenty of time, so we grabbed three trigs on the way in. The event was drawing to a close, so our intrepid band headed off, but had allowed time for a few more finds on the way home, including this one. TFTC Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

Found with Sol de Lune, fitzy_1965 and LuckyL10n on our trip to Lane Cove for the birthday event. A lovely trig in a great area, to stop for a quick rest and stretch. TFTC GCA!

Lots of trigs in this area so this arvo I popped over on route home and cleaned most of the up! This one was an easy spot from across the road.

12-Jul-12
Found on a run of Trigs in the area this evening. Atleast this one is easily seen at night.

31-Mar-12
Not far from home, in fact I usually drive past it every day going to and from work. But I needed a couple of more finds to make it at least one a day for the month so drove up here this afternoon. A nice old church!

28-Feb-12
On the way between 1 shop & another, this was along the way, trig very easily seen; I gather many members of the public wouldn’t know. Thanks.

12-Feb-12
Found on a run through Sydney with Just a cacher. Great old church and associated graves with a couple of "First Fleeters" and Lady Parkes in residence.

Driven past many many times and have found the cache nearby. Lovely old church. The trigs in this area have taken on a new lease of life here.

Another easy find on today's Trig hunt, the large white Cross is easily seen from a long way away, a lovely Church and very interesting cemetery.

I went and photographed this one at night while my son trained nearby. It is well lit up!

As the original publisher of this cache I thought it was time I dropped by and logged it! I'd spotted a trig marked on some old parish maps and this church was right on the spot. It's quite a high point over the river and before all the development since the 60s it would have been a prominent point.
Similar to some I've seen in Queensland the trig is apparently the large white cross - such crosses are a bit unusual on non-Catholic churches of this era apparently.
A good bit of history.

25-May-11
The 7th and last trig on a run home, though the disc seems to be gone form this one, the pole is there on the top of the cross.

19-May-11
Taking advantage of the awesome winter weather to get out of the office at lunch time. Today I headed north to Ryde for a quick stop to find this trig.
cheers,
Wal

No trouble at all finding this one!

The beautiful church actually has a GC cache nearby (not actually on the church grounds) so I knew the area well.

I parked briefly in the church car park, took my photos, and was on my way in less than two minutes.

06-Apr-11
Drove right up to the church. Parked outside and looked for a traditional trig, but no. Got the pic, but it's of the cross on top of the church. I think that's what everyone is talking about Rolling Eyes Nice Church anyway.

Oh well, STF is better than none I guess.
I didn't think I'd ever see this type of trig station.

Saw this last night but was too lazy to move out of my comfy armchair. Never dreamed it would still be a FTF this morning. Will upload my photo when I get home.
